Meet Congressman Steve Palazzo
Monday night I held a tele-town hall where I was joined by South Mississippians from every county in the 4th District for a live discussion over the phone. Throughout the tele-town hall I shared brief updates on what we’re working on in Congress, but more importantly it was an opportunity for me to hear from you on the issues that are important to South Mississippi.

During the call we were able to touch on many topics from taxes to national security, to the importance of smart federal investment in South Mississippi. I also asked everyone to participate in several poll questions, and the results to those questions are displayed below.

Listening to my constituents and making sure your voices are heard is my number one priority, so again thank you to everyone who participated. If you weren’t able to partake in the call Monday night I hope you will join us next time - we have one coming up in the month of May!

Poll Results

Tax Day

Monday was one of everyone’s favorite days of the year, “Tax Day”, or as I like to refer to it, “Abolish the IRS Day.” This agency of bureaucrats has been another on the long list of scandals that has plagued the Obama administration. They were caught red handed in 2013 targeting conservative organizations.

Then worse, they tried to play it off as “no big deal” to the hardworking American taxpayers. The IRS lacks leadership and transparency, they are unreliable and careless with taxpayer’s personal information, and they continue to implement a tax code that is too complex. In Congress we’ve passed several bills that hold IRS employees accountable and remind them that their commitment is to the American taxpayers. Outside of holding employees accountable we’ve also made it a priority in Congress to create a tax code that is simpler, fairer, and flatter.

Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Bill

Last week, we had a full Committee markup of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Bill. I’m proud to say that this appropriations bill stays the course we've been working towards over the years to fix the countless problems at the VA. It continues to address healthcare shortages and management issues, and it provides much needed oversight to ensure taxpayer dollars are being used to improve services and programs that directly affect our veterans. We have also vastly increased oversight of the VA and eliminated bonuses for all senior executive VA employees.

Our men and women in uniform make great sacrifices to protect our country and our freedoms. In return we must keep our commitment to them by continuing to invest in those who have served and those who continue to serve.

Small Public Housing Agency Opportunity Act

I also held a briefing in DC on The Small Public Housing Agency Opportunity Act of 2016, the legislation I introduced in the House last month. I was joined by officials from National Association of Housing and Redevelopment officials (NAHRO), Pubic Housing Authorities Directors Association (PHADA), and Mississippi Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (MAHRO), who were in Washington attending a national conference.

My bill aims to bring the regulation and oversight of small public housing agencies more in line with resources available and the number of units that agencies manage so that they can better focus on serving low-income families.

I was honored to receive a proclamation from MAHRO for my work on this legislation presented by Hattiesburg native and President of the Mississippi Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials, Judy Mellard.
