The Hillary Recession

Click Here to Visit Larry Kudlow at Kudlow and Company

Trump knows you can’t tax your way into prosperity by Lawrence Kudlow

This economy may be perilously close to recession. That was the message of the second-quarter real-GDP report and its meager 1.2 percent growth rate.

Over the past year, real GDP has slipped to a paltry 1.2 percent. Business investment continues to fall. Building and factory construction has dropped sharply. Productivity is flat. The profits recession is still in force.

And what’s the Hillary Clinton plan? Tax us into prosperity.

In her own words at the DNC on Thursday night, this is the fix: “Wall Street, corporations, and the super-rich are going to start paying their fair share of taxes.” Why? “Not because we resent success. [!] Because when more than 90 percent of gains have gone to the top 1 percent, that’s where the money is.”

Let me get this right. In order to spur growth, Hillary intends to raise taxes on individuals, businesses, capital gains, stock trading, and firms that move overseas (which they do because the U.S. has the most uncompetitive tax system in the corporate world). In addition, Hillary’s door is open for a carbon tax, higher payroll taxes, and a 25 percent gun tax.

She also argued in Philadelphia that the economy is not working the way it should because our democracy isn’t working the way it should.

Huh?

What she’s getting at is appointing Supreme Court justices who “will get money out of politics” and passing “a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United.”

Citizens United removed spending limits for super-PACs. And yet those mean and nasty super-PACs have thus far benefited from pro-Hillary hedge-fund contributions to the tune of $48.5 million, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Donald Trump, on the other hand, has received only $19,000 from hedge funds.

Get it? Citizens United, according to Hillary, is the source of our weak recovery and must be overturned. Meanwhile, she is the big beneficiary of the Supreme Court decision to allow unlimited political donations.

Next there are the recurring themes of class warfare and inequality, roots of evil according to Hillary. Turns out that the top 1 percent received a big share of income growth during the recovery. Okay, but it also suffered the biggest loss during the Great Recession.

Research from Scott Winship of the Manhattan Institute shows that during the recession, the top 1 percent lost 36 percent of its income while the bottom 90 percent lost 12 percent. And through 2014, the top 1 percent was still poorer by 18 percent than it was in 2000. That’s compared to a 9 percent decline for the rest of us.

According to Winship, income for the top 1 percenters was basically no higher in 2014 than in 2000. Turns out that group bumped into the same income stagnation suffered by the U.S. middle class since 2000.

And according to new studies by Aparna Mathur of AEI, raising top marginal tax rates reduces growth incentives and yields very few revenues. Yet in addition to higher tax rates, Hillary wants $1 trillion in new spending programs.

The numbers also don’t add up for Obama, who defended his so-called recovery at the DNC and even called Hillary, a 30-year member of the establishment, a change-maker.

Obama’s seven-year recovery averaged 2.1 percent real growth at an annualized rate. For historical comparison, after seven years, JFK’s economy increased by 5.4 percent yearly and Reagan’s by 4.5 percent.

Did JFK and Reagan beget long booms by raising taxes? No. They cut tax rates across the board.

Hillary is a combination of Barack Obama 3.0 and Bernie Sanders 2.0. This is not change. This will not yield strong growth, lift jobs and wages, and make America more globally competitive.

A week prior to the DNC Donald Trump offered a different perspective at the RNC: “America is one of the highest-taxed nations in the world. Reducing taxes will cause new companies and new jobs to come roaring back into our country.

Then we are going to deal with the issue of regulation, one of the greatest job-killers overall. . . . We are going to lift restrictions on the production of American energy. . . . With these new economic policies, trillions of dollars will start flowing into our country.”

So Trump wants to reduce tax rates and regulations, unleash energy, and make America the most hospitable investment destination in the world. Hillary wants to raise taxes, regulations, and spending, and put the energy sector out of business. (She would abolish coal and oil-and-gas fracking.)

No wonder the blue-collar, hard-hat, Democratic middle class is going for Trump.

Hillary is not an agent of change. Nor does she have any idea how to restore rapid economic growth. Instead, she is a prisoner of the Left. Tax the rich, inequality, redistribution.

If Trump stays on his growth message, he’ll whoop her in November.

America blighted by industrial wind

“America is being auctioned off to the highest bidder.” – Donald J. Trump

A recent Joe Mahoney article, NY looks to the wind to replace its fossil fuel diet, was full of half-truths and misinformation.

There is nothing “free,” “clean” or “green” about industrial wind. Quite the contrary: the true costs of industrial wind development are astronomical.

Yet, the wishful thinking of Governor Andrew Cuomo, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, “green” ideologues, and “renewable” energy hustlers and subsidy seekers who benefit from this massive taxpayer and ratepayer rip-off has been repeated by countless “journalists” without question for years now.

Mahoney’s article highlighted Cuomo’s approval of the proposed wind factory off Montauk, NY. It claimed: “The offshore ‘wind farm’ could be a symbol of how the state can meet Cuomo’s ambitious goal of getting half of New York’s energy from carbon-free sources by 2030. Now those sources represent about 23 percent of the state's energy draw.”

The statement is grossly misleading and inaccurate.

New York State’s emissions-free hydro power (including what it imports from Canada) already supplies approximately 23% of New York State electricity generation all by itself. New York State’s emissions-free nuclear power supplies approximately another 30% of the state’s electricity generation. “Other Renewables” (wind, solar, biofuels, geothermal) now provide a measly 3% (US Energy Information Administration or EIA).

Clearly, current hydro and nuclear power supplies in New York State alone already exceed Cuomo’s emissions-free target of 50 percent. But for some reason emissions-free nuclear is not counted toward NY’s “emissions-free” goal.

Most infuriating for New York State taxpayers and ratepayers is the fact that New York State was already getting approximately 50% of its electricity from emissions-free sources (19% from hydro + 29% from nuclear + 1% from “Other Renewables”) way back in 2000 – before Governor Cuomo and Co. began throwing billions of taxpayer and ratepayer dollars into the wind, plastering rural NY with these bird-slaughtering lemons, as reported by MasterResource.org.

Scientific Proof MIA

As our government officials continue to throw billions of dollars into the wind, the key question that needs to be asked by everyone is this:

Where is the Scientific PROOF that wind energy is a net societal benefit?

The answer is that there is no such scientific proof. Zero. Zip. Nada. None.

However, there is much proof that development of sprawling, unreliable, subsidized, mandated industrial wind factories has been vastly detrimental across the nation and the world. So much so that President Obama and his Fish and Wildlife Service had to approve 30-Year Eagle-Kill permits specifically to accommodate the bird-slaughtering wind industry – letting it off scot free for butchering our wildlife.

Governor Cuomo’s pie-in-the-sky ‘green’ energy policy is bereft of any realistic assessment of the expensive lessons already learned in Europe and elsewhere as a result of pushing these ‘renewable’ energy policies.

Results include, but are not limited to: “skyrocketing” electricity rates, industries fleeing, 2 – 4 jobs lost for every ‘green’ job created, destroyed habitats and countryside, birds and bats slaughtered, lost property values, health issues, utter civil discord among people forced to live with these behemoths, and increasing numbers of people being thrust into ‘energy poverty.’

All this as a result of the same ‘green’ mess that Governor Cuomo, President Obama, Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party continue to push.

While they demonize fossil fuel use and promise to rid us of this vital energy, the truth is that the availability of reliable, affordable power thanks to fossil fuels is directly correlated with greatly improved health and longevity here in the USA, as Alex Epstein explains in his book, The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels.

It’s All About the Money

WHY do they continue to push such an obvious failure as industrial wind, you ask? Simple: “It’s all about the money!’

Manhattan Institute scholar Robert Bryce recently reported that the wind industry has garnered $176 Billion of crony-capitalist cash here in the United States. It’s no wonder the American Wind Energy Association spends over $20 million per year lobbying for more of the same!

Big Wind and the Big Banks who back them are playing the system to tap into taxpayers’ and ratepayers’ wallets, while the crony-politicians who enable the whole dastardly deal get hefty ‘campaign donations’ in return. The greatest Ponzi schemes of all time pale in comparison to the eco-heist these Green Gangsters are pulling off.

Industrial wind was initiated in the United States by ENRON as a tax shelter generating scheme. Nothing about that has changed. Big Wind enriches the 0.1% at taxpayers' and ratepayers' expense.

Just ask Warren Buffett, who said: “We get tax credits if we build ‘wind farms.’ That's the only reason to build them. They don’t make sense without the tax credits.”

Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump was absolutely correct when he underscored the critical need to address our nation’s economic demise, saying: “America is being auctioned off to the highest bidder.” The Industrial Wind Blight across America exemplifies this sad reality!

Take Action

Contact your Congressional Representatives. Tell them to stop wasting our money on the environmentally destructive consumer fraud that is industrial wind energy.

If they won’t, vote the bums out!

Sugar Kaine enjoyed sweet gifts as governor

Well, it was a rocky coronation for Hillary Clinton. Although she secured the controversial nomination, her acceptance speech was widely panned, even criticized by Democrat operative David Axelrod. In fact, it was so boring that her husband fell asleep during her 56 minute excursion into political fantasy land.

It remains to be seen what kind of bounce she will receive in the polls. After the GOP finished their convention, Donald Trump secured the lead for the first time in months. Except for the establishment and some die hard Ted Cruz supporters; the Republican Party is united behind Trump as their nominee.

In contrast, the Democrats started their convention in total disarray as the WikiLeaks email bombshell clearly showed the DNC favoritism toward Clinton that Bernie Sanders had complained about during the campaign. The result was that DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz was forced to announce her resignation as the convention started. She was even booed off the stage at a gathering of Florida delegates.

Many progressives remain rightly furious at the DNC and the Clinton campaign for a rigged process that gave her the nomination. It’s too early to determine how many of these supporters will stay home, vote third party, support Trump or eventually follow the lead of the Vermont Senator and support Clinton.

While the convention concluded under a cloud of criticism, troubling questions about the Democrat Party vice presidential nominee were totally ignored by the liberal media. Last weekend, Clinton made the “safe” choice and selected U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) as her running mate.

Kaine is considered to be a moderate, as he is on the opposing side from the progressive wing of the party on many issues. Kaine is a staunch supporter of the Trans Pacific Partnership, a hated trade deal that was opposed by Sanders and Donald Trump, and became a major issue in this year’s presidential race.

Kaine is very close to the big banks and financial industry. According to Trump, Kaine is “in the pocket of Wall Street.” Unlike Trump and Sanders, Kaine supported the Iraq War, another issue that will certainly not endear him to the party’s loud progressive wing.

Supporters of Israel should be concerned about Kaine as well. He was one of only eight members of the U.S. Senate to boycott the historic speech of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Congress in March of 2015.

He received financial donations from Esam Omeish, a radical Muslim operative who is associated with the terrorist organization the Muslim Brotherhood. Kaine appointed Omeish to the Virginia Immigration Commission even though Omeish is Vice President of a dangerous mosque that was led by terrorist Anwar Al-Awlaki as its Imam and had other terrorists in the congregation including two 9/11 hijackers and Nidal Hasan, who targeted his fellow Fort Hood soldiers, killing 13 and wounding 32, in the 2009 massacre.

To make matters even worse, Kaine claims that he is a “strong supporter of the nuclear agreement with Iran” and said the deal is “a dramatic improvement over the status quo.” This deal is strongly opposed by Israel, which considers it a threat to the country’s survival. Trump and other Republicans have blasted the deal as contrary to American interests, especially since it allowed Iran to access $150 billion in frozen assets.

If elected Vice President, Kaine also promised the Spanish television network Telemundo that he would push a bill to legalize all illegal immigrants during the first 100 days of the new administration.

Another issue which may cause Kaine trouble in battleground states is his staunch opposition to the Second Amendment. He has consistently received an “F” from the NRA. For example, as Governor of Virginia, Kaine vetoed a bill that would have given motorists the right to carry a gun in their vehicles for self-defense.

Even more troubling than his controversial positions, Kaine’s decision to accept lavish gifts while Governor of Virginia may be his Achilles’ heel. Trump has labeled Kaine “corrupt” since he accepted over $201,600 in gifts while serving as Governor of Virginia, according to the Virginia Public Access Project. Interestingly, former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell was indicted by federal prosecutors for accepting gifts in exchange for political favors.

Some of the gifts Kaine received included an $18,000 Caribbean vacation, $5,500 in clothing, trips to the NCAA basketball Final Four, as well as travel expenses for political events and conferences. These gifts were provided by his political donors, a major pharmaceutical company and the largest electrical provider in Virginia among others.

It certainly seems that Kaine is a typical politician who enjoyed all the benefits of his elected office. This type of “politics as usual” attitude is exactly what millions of American voters are tired of tolerating. It is one of many motivating factors that will drive turnout among the electorate this November.

Kaine and his running mate are both old school Democrats who take advantage of perks and bend the law to their advantage.

Both of them have been in politics for decades and in this change election, they are clearly on the wrong side of history.

Staying Sharp with Mary Jane Popp

Available on Amazon
Do you want to keep your brain young? Dr. Henry Emmons and Dr. David Alter shared some basic tips to get you started on POPPOFF.

In “Staying Sharp” these docs tell us what to do today to have a healthy, vibrant mind tomorrow with nine keys for a youthful brain through modern science and ageless wisdom. Dr. Emmons is a psychiatrist who integrates mind-body and natural therapies, mindfulness and compassion practices into his clinical work.

Dr. Alter is a psychologist with thirty years experience in health psychology, neuropsychology, and clinical hypnosis. Want that youthful brain? Okay. A youthful brain is:

1) ACTIVE. Staying in motion makes the brain bigger, stronger, and faster while protecting against harmful effects of stress. Exercise and moving the body mindfully (yoga is great for this) improves brain health, energy, and emotional resilience.
2) RESTED. Sleep is among the most powerful means to promote mood, memory, and healing. Sleep problems, although more common as we age, are preventable. The mind can be recharged through safe and natural mind-body approaches, including accessible self-hypnosis.
3) NOURISHED. Nutrition has a vital impact on brain health. A brain-supporting approach to diet encompasses whole and plant-based foods, healthy fats, fiber, probiotics, and emphasizes nutritional diversity to nourish and protect the mind.
4) CURIOUS. Novelty, play, and wonder act as potent brain “fertilizers” that reboot the brain, keeping it fresh and vital by balancing knowledge with a desire to know more. People who remain curious and open to new experience tend to lead longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.
5) FLEXIBLE. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s amazing ability to rewire in the face of new experiences. Learning to adapt and respond more flexibly to change, through meditation and other means, allows people to thrive despite the challenges faced in the second half of life.
6) OPTIMISTIC. Higher levels of optimism lead to measurable physical and mental health benefits. Cultivating the inner quality of optimism supports greater resilience against age-related challenges and set-backs.
7) EMPATHIC. Our brains are wired to be compassionate and generous. Practicing empathic skills regulates one’s own mind and behavior, promotes contentment, calmness, and satisfaction…and influences the brains of those with whom we interact.
8) CONNECTED. It is important to connect meaningfully with others and develop a sense of belonging in the world. Mental and physical health depends on how well social connections provide meaning, purpose, and direction.
9) AUTHENTIC. The true self may be found in all of life’s experiences…triumphs and failures. By discovering one’s true self through awareness, honesty, and discernment, we become fully embodied authentic individuals. Learn to stop “wearing other people’s faces” or living out others’ expectations to simply please them.

Isn’t it amazing? I’m sure common sense reigns supreme as we look at these ideas, but we sometimes ignore that common sense. If you want more information on their book “Staying Sharp” you can go to www.StayingSharp.org.

Guess the old saying . . . ”if you don’t use it, you lose it” rings true. Guess we were not meant to be couch potatoes without a thought rolling around in our brains. Remember . . . STAY SHARP ALWAYS!

Vote count - From the media?

We have an instructive contrast between how the mainstream media treats a candidate whose positions it supports and how it treats a candidate whose positions it loathes.

Both of our candidates have remarkable similarities. They’re outsiders who parachuted into the political arena and have never previously held office. Both are scornful of the entrenched political elite and promise big changes if they’re elected.

And while the net worth of the candidates varies considerably, both rely on extensive free media coverage to increase their exposure while at the same time reducing the need for expensive media budgets.

Finally, both candidates prefer rallies and crowd–generating events to the traditional grind of going door–to–door to engage the public and mobilize support.

So wouldn’t an ideal test of political relevance and candidate support among the general public be the number of votes amassed on Election Day?

Well yes. And no.

If the election confirms the media’s pre–determined bias, then THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN! If the election doesn’t go the media’s way, then who cares what a bunch of yahoos think?

Which brings us to DeRay Mckesson and Donald Trump.

But to learn more about our couple, you're going to have to click here to get the complete story at Newsmax.com.

1200 rapes and the West

The mass rape of hundreds of German women mostly by Muslim migrants last New Year's was recently revealed to be far worse than originally acknowledged.

Authorities now believe that more than 1,200 women were sexually assaulted – more than twice the original estimate of 500. While more than 2,000 men were allegedly involved, only 120 suspects — about half of them recently arrived migrants — have been identified.

One explanation for why it took half a year for the full extent of the crime to be revealed is the German police's effort to avoid a public backlash against refugees.

But ultimately, Holger Munch, president of the German Federal Crime Police Office, acknowledged to the German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung that there is "a connection between the [sexual assaults] and the rapid migration in 2015."

Denial is not a strategy. Western countries that cherish women's rights must wake up to the fact that many migrants could challenge those values.

Most of the mass migration comes from violence-plagued, Muslim-majority countries in the Middle East and North Africa, where women are second-class citizens subject to honor killings and various legal restrictions, and where the local culture often condones rape, encourages wife-beating, and treats women as sexual objects (with 72 virgins promised to Muslim men who reach heaven).

Thus, just as the mass migration from the Middle East and North Africa raises the specter of regular Islamist terror on European soil, it also augurs the kind of sexual abuse that those regions have traditionally tolerated.

German officials implicitly seemed to acknowledge as much with their laughably impotent campaign to re-educate migrants using signs that explain acceptable behavior towards women.

Non-Muslim ("infidel") women are especially vulnerable to sexual assault: Christian women are often abused and denigrated in Islamic societies, as extensively exposed by Raymond Ibrahim, author of Crucified Again.

The Islamic State (ISIS) regards the Yazidi, another religious minority, as devil worshippers and reportedly enslaved up to 5,000 Yazidi women, subjecting them to rape, sexual slavery, forced prostitution and other acts of extreme brutality, like burning alive a 20-year-old girl "because she refused to perform . . . . read more at The Investigative Project on Terrorism

A World at War says Congressman Palazzo

Click Here to Contact Congressman Palazzo

This week another barbaric act of terror took place in a church in St.-Etienne-du-Rouvray, France resulting in the death of an 87 year old priest, Rev. Jacques Hamel. Shortly after the killing, ISIS released a video showing the assassins pledging their loyalty and allegiance and stating this horrific act was carried out in the “name of ISIS.”

All the while, our current president, and those in his party vying to assume that role, have NO plan to stop ISIS. In fact, it doesn’t seem to be on their priority list at all. Their disregard for the safety of our country is both appalling and frightening. Even Pope Francis in his address to the public this week stated that “the world is at war.”

I fully understand that our number one job in Congress is the common defense of this nation. That is why I’ve supported budgets that fully fund our military as well as make sound federal investments in South Mississippi’s defense industries that play a vital role in supporting our military’s mission readiness.

However my Democrat colleagues have continued to vote against funding our own military using their opposition to promote social components of their liberal agenda.

We need leadership who understands that the safety and security of this nation is THE number one priority. This isn’t the time to fight for a liberal agenda; it’s a time to fight for the defense, prosperity and the hardworking people of our great nation.

Your comments are always welcome and you can contact Congressman Palazzo on facebook, twitter or by visiting his website.

DNC - 700 paid rooters get $50 to cheer

In the above clip, the delegate says that he got to the convention between 5-6pm and the place was virtually empty but that it suspiciously filled up very quickly. “Every seat in the house is full – so those seat fillers you guys were hearing about? It’s real, they’re in here now,” states the delegate.

He went on to explain how the seat fillers were people he did not know and hadn’t seen at the convention previously.

The man goes on to note how the arrival of the seat fillers coincided with the media narrative that the DNC is now far more unified than when it began and how everyone is applauding and cheering in unity.

“It’s because the Bernie people aren’t here and the people that are here are getting paid to sit in their seats and clap their hands,” he adds, noting that attendees are also being blocked from getting back in if they leave their seat at any point – even to just go to the bathroom.

“My guess is that’s because a seat filler is in your seat and the optics of everyone having to shift and stand and move is not something they want to see,” says the delegate, adding, “There are people in that hall who are being represented in the media as Bernie Sanders people and they are not – don’t believe what you see on TV.”

“There are a lot of people here who aren’t delegates who are standing and cheering and clapping for somebody that we aren’t ready to believe in,” he concludes, promising to hold the Democratic establishment accountable.

Note the Craigslist.Philly advertisement that was featured to attract seat fillers.

Wikileaks dumps DNC voicemails

Click Here to Read More from Colonel Allen B. West

Says Colonel West: "The Washington Times has just released an article with the most recent dump from Wikileaks. This time it is not emails. It is voicemails. Judging by what Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is doing with his timing, it appears he is very much Anti-Hillary Clinton.

I wonder why that could be? Voicemails show former ambassadors calling DNC officials for time with Obama. This is a huge no-no. Pay to play much DNC?"

The Washington Times says: On the night President Obama and Vice Presidential nominee Tim Kaine were scheduled to speak to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, the anti-secrecy whistle-blower group released hacked voicemails of top Democratic officials.

Wikileaks put up a page containing 29 mp3 files of calls, identified by phone number, running approximately 14 minutes combined.

None of the messages listened to by The Washington Times contained anything immediately obvious as embarrassing or incriminating.

However, the very fact the DNC voicemail system has been hacked is embarrassing and could augur the release of far more damaging material later.

The majority of the messages, several of the speakers of which address themselves to “Andrew,” are mostly pro-forma lasting a few seconds, and indicating only that the person has called and wants “Andrew” to call back.

Several concern matters of scheduling, for ambassador dinners, White House St. Patrick’s Day events, DNC gatherings and the Philadelphia convention. One caller asks about the best way to contact first lady Michelle Obama, and another asks “Andrew” for an unspecified favor.

A few calls are in the “unsolicited angry voter” genre, which politicians and journalists get by the bushel and are powerless over. However, they might now play as strange given the WikiLeaks released emails showing the DNC was trying to tilt the race toward Hillary Clinton.

“I am furious at what you’re doing with Bernie Sanders. He is having far too much influence,” says one of the longer callers, who identifies herself as a woman on a fixed income who donated to Hillary Clinton. She demands the DNC “quit acquiescing to this person who’s playing the victim card” and giving talking points to Donald Trump to use against Mrs. Clinton.

Another elderly-sounding anti-Sanders woman is furious that the DNC let Mr. Sanders put prominent black philosopher Cornel West on the platform committee, noting Mr. West’s harsh criticisms of Mr. Obama as a “Republican in blackface.”

The release came just days after Wikileaks‘ release of internal Democratic National Committee emails forced the resignation of DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and cast a pall over the whole convention. The emails showed that DNC officials had colluded to tip the presidential-primary race toward Hillary Clinton, contrary to Ms. Wasserman Schultz’s repeated insistence at the time that the DNC was remaining neutral.

In an interview with CNN, before the release of the recordings, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange had warned that there was “a lot more material” to come on the U.S. elections.

Parties change - not always for the better

It's No Longer Reagan's GOP
"I'm worried," George W. Bush reportedly told a recent gathering of former aides and advisers, "that I will be the last Republican president." Like many other mainstream conservatives and Republicans, he fears that the ascendancy of Donald Trump will prove so toxic to the party's future that it may spell the end of the GOP as a viable political institution.

The pessimists could be right. Political parties are not immortal. The Federalist Party — the ideological home of John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, and John Marshall — was the dominant force in early American politics.

But the Federalists' embrace of the Alien and Sedition Acts antagonized voters and contributed to Adams's defeat in the presidential election of 1800 — a defeat from which the party never recovered. A few decades later, the Whig Party was a power to contend with in American political life. Yet it, too, eventually imploded, undone in the 1850s by the issue of slavery.

The Republican Party was born in 1854, and there have been no fewer than 18 Republican presidents. The GOP has withstood a great deal in its 162 years, but can it withstand the authoritarian, alienating candidacy of Trump, the most unpopular major-party nominee in modern times? Perhaps not.

More likely, though, the GOP will not die but adapt, as long-lived parties generally do, retaining its name while revising — or even overturning — its core beliefs and electoral message.

Party creeds are not chiseled in granite. Most Republicans and Democrats have at least a general sense of the values their parties stand for, and many of them are in the habit of thinking that those values go to the party's essence.

When a Howard Dean declares that he represents "the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party," or when a Tea Party conservative lambastes the GOP's "RINOs" (Republicans in Name Only), they are speaking as committed believers — candidates and activists for whom parties are supposed to embody fundamental principles, not just a hunger to win elections.

Yet in the end, political parties — or at any rate, big national parties — are about winning elections. And as society changes, so does a party's ideological orientation. The transformation can be gradual, or it can be dramatic; sometimes party members embrace a new doctrine by degrees, sometimes intraparty factions clash in a battle royale.

Either way, parties evolve. If you're a partisan loyalist, a Republican or Democrat before anything else, you'll adjust to your party's new stance and vote for its nominees. If your philosophical convictions are what matter most, you may break with a party once it no longer upholds them.

The Democratic Party today would have little use for
staunch anticommunists like Harry Truman
or John F. Kennedy.
In the decades after the Civil War, for example, the Republican Party vigorously championed black civil rights, while segregationists and white supremacists dominated the Democratic Party. High tariffs were once the centerpiece of the GOP's economic program; it was Democrats who pushed hard for free trade and condemned protectionism as "robbery of the great majority . . . for the benefit of the few."

In Harry Truman's day, there was no contradiction between robust anticommunism and loyalty to the Democratic Party. A generation later, anticommunist Cold Warriors were far more likely to be Republicans.

Democrats today would have little use for a candidate like Truman, and they wouldn't dream of nominating John F. Kennedy — a conservative Democrat who backed across-the-board tax cuts, limited government, and increased military spending. Meanwhile Republicans, as the convention in Cleveland made only too clear, would turn their backs on a candidate like Ronald Reagan.

The Gipper's GOP — the party of muscular internationalism, American exceptionalism, free-market optimism, and social conservatism — has been overtaken by Trump's isolationist anger and populist resentment.

Parties change, and not always for the better. In the long run, there are no immutable Republican or Democratic values. Political parties exist to fight elections, not to uphold philosophical beliefs. In elevating Trump, the GOP is rejecting ideological standards it long advocated and losing many of its longtime supporters.

But is it committing suicide? Probably not. The parties' brands endure, even if their principles don't.
