Congressman Palazzo
NDAA - The world is not becoming a safer place. In fact, it’s becoming much more dangerous. It is crucial now more than ever that we continue to support a strong national defense.

The National Defense Authorization Act is legislation considered by Congress each year to authorize funding for our nation’s military personnel, readiness, and operations.

Recently, The NDAA passed in both chambers of Congress and this week was sent to the president’s desk to be signed into law. However, due to his own domestic political agenda and short-sighted concerns, the president vetoed this bill.

I’m outraged that the president would attempt to play political games with our Military. Our men and women in uniform are the best in the world at what they do. They make great sacrifices every day to protect our nation and we must ensure they have the tools and resources they need.

Our number one Constitutional responsibility in Congress is to provide for the common defense of this nation. That is exactly what this bill aims to accomplish, and by choosing to veto it, this president is putting American lives and our national security at risk.

State Cyber Day

As you may know I currently serve as Co-Chairman of the House National Guard and Reserve Caucus. This week we hosted a State Cyber Day event in the Rayburn House Office Building. A large number of organizations traveled to our nation’s capital to tell their story and learn more about cyber-attacks and cyber security.

I was especially proud to welcome our Mississippi National Guard to this event to show off our capabilities.

The cyber threat continues to grow and I know the consequences of an attack would be dire. When Hurricane Katrina hit, we lost electricity, ATMs did not have money, stores were not resupplied with basic necessities, and local commerce broke down. The cause was not cyber, but the devastating effects were quite similar.

I believe the unique capabilities and organization of the National Guard and Reserves offer excellent and cost-effective opportunities to provide skilled and effective teams to both state and federal efforts.

Southern Miss

It was a great day to be a Golden Eagle last Saturday at the Southern Miss Homecoming football game! I’d also like congratulate two of my good friends, Andy Mercier and Todd Buchanan, on being inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame last week.
