Natural Stress Relievers from Mary Jane Popp

Dr. Kathlen Fry
What if you could safely and effectively treat yourself and your family at home for colds, flu, ear infections, even food poisoning without having to rush to urgent care ever again?

Dr. Kathleen Fry, a traditionally trained medical doctor, now a Homeopathic Doctor, says you can. Author of “Vitality” How to get it and keep it, and her upcoming book “There’s A Remedy for That” revealed all on POPPOFF.

With the holidays upon us, we talked about stress on with tips to deal with it in a natural way.

1) DEEP BREATHING. The fastest and simplest stress reliever is our own breath. Taking a few minutes to breathe slowly and deeply helps to lower cortisol levels and reduce agitation.

2) GET EXTRA SLEEP. Try getting into bed an hour earlier (without any electronic devices) to read something soothing or inspirational before sleep. If you have trouble falling or staying asleep because your brain just won’t “turn off”, try the homeopathic remedy COFFEA CRUDA. You can take one pellet of the 30c potency at bedtime and repeat it again if you awaken in the night. It’s not habit forming and won’t make you feel groggy in the morning. Homeopathic remedies are made in a special way in licensed homeopathic pharmacies by serially diluting and shaking a concentrated “mother tincture” of any natural substance. A remedy of 30c potency has been serially diluted in 100 drops of water 30 times.

3) LIMIT CAFFEINE AND ALCOHOL. Caffeine is a nervous system stimulant and can worsen the symptoms of stress. Alcohol can disrupt your sleeping patterns not to mention wreak havoc on your gut.

4) SPEND TIME WALKING IN NATURE. Even 15 minutes walking around the neighborhood can make a difference.

5) LIMIT TIME UNDER ARTIFICIAL LIGHT. Try to get some time in natural light each day, especially in winter. Taking extra Vitamin D helps as well.

6) COMMON REMEDIES FOR STRESS. NUX VOMICA is for people working too much who suffer heartburn and irritability. (Also a great remedy for hangover). Take 1 pellet 1-2 times a day or as frequently as every 1-2 hours when battling a hangover.

7) ARGENTUM NITRICUM is a great remedy for people who get hot and sweaty just thinking about getting on an airplane.

8) GELSEMIUM SEMPERVIRENS is a great remedy for people who get nervous before events like visiting the in-laws who voted differently than they did. Also a big help for stage fright or fear of speaking.

9) RESCUE REMEDY is one of the Bach Flower remedies that can be very helpful for relieving generalized, acute anxiety.

10) COUNTING YOUR BLESSINGS. Dr. Fry told me that whenever she is stressed, she stops and looks around at all the wonderful things in our beautiful world that brings her joy like her grandson Isaiah’s sweet smile, the snow covered mountains, and the fresh air she is privileged to breathe.

A positive mental attitude is the best antidote no matter what the stressors are in your life. Though things may look gloomy at times, there is always something or someone in your life that has blessed you on some level.

Here’s your prescription. Relax and enjoy the beauty of this special holiday season and try not to sweat the small stuff.

HAPPY NEW YEAR and GOD BLESS ALL !

Life on Purpose from Mary Jane Popp

Available on Amazon
Is living what matters most?

Can that living change everything?

I know someone who truly believes that purpose is the key.

Dr. Victor Strecher knows.

When he lost his daughter to a rare heart disease at age 19, he made it his life mission to find purpose, and help others do the same.

This life event challenged every aspect of his personal and professional experience, and drove him to an exhaustive search from ancient philosophy to cutting edge science to pinpoint the potential and impact of purpose in our lives.

He claims that purpose can:

  • Add Years to your life
  • Reduce risk of heart attack and stroke
  • Cut risk of Alzheimers by more than half
  • Help us relax during the day and sleep better at night
  • Double the chances of staying drug and alcohol-free after treatment
  • Activate antibody and antiviral response and diminish inflammatory cells
  • Increase good cholesterol Repair chromosomes

In “Life On Purpose” Dr. Strecher has a six-step guide to help you discover your purpose in life.

1.) CONSIDER WHAT MATTERS MOST TO YOU. Choose the top three you care about most in your life. Achievement…Community…Creativity…Enjoyment…Expertise…Independence…Kindness…Relationships…Reputation…Responsibility…Security…Self-Control…Spirituality…Tradition…Vitality - - Once you have selected them, spend time thinking about or write why each value is important to you.

2.) THINK ABOUT THE PERSON OR PEOPLE YOU’D LIKE TO EMULATE (NOT IMITATE). Someone in your family? An historical figure? A public figure? A cartoon character? This is your purpose and you can choose whatever mix of people you like. Just remember, you are who you choose to be, so be careful who you choose.

3.) TAKE THE HEADSTONE TEST. That’s right. Draw a headstone, write your name on it, then write your date of birth. For the date of death, write TODAY. What would your epitaph be? What would you want people to say about you at your memorial service?

4.) NOW THAT YOU’VE PRIMED THE PUMP, ASK YOURSELF. WHAT ARE THE GOALS IN MY LIFE THAT MATTER MOST?” To make it easier, you might want to break these into personal, family, work (or school), and community goals that you deeply value.

5.) ASSEMBLE THESE VALUED GOALS INTO AN OVERALL LIFE PURPOSE. This is where you want to stop and ask yourself, “Is this purpose bigger than myself?” Ask yourself this simple, timeless question” “In living toward this purpose, will I treat others the way I would like to be treated?” Make sure the suit fits.

6.) WEAR THE SUIT. Post your purpose in a place you will see it every day. Make sure you can recite your purpose to yourself or others. Consider sharing your purpose with the people who are close to you. If the purpose doesn’t fit, change it until it does.

So many of us are focused on diet and exercise. Dr. Strecher ptovides us with the true secret to living with health and wellness. The good Doc is an award-winning pioneer in the field of behavioral science and Professor at the University of Michigan School of Health.

You can check out his website at www.VictorStrecher.com.

Life on Prupose” tells us how living for what matters most…really does CHANGE EVERYTHING!

Cleanli-Less by Mary Jane Popp

Available at Amazon
Are we too clean? Seriously, have we become over sanitized? And, what about our kidlets? Are we putting them in harm’s way?

Dr. Marie-Claire Arrieta says you bet we are. She is a scientist who has researched babies who are missing key intestinal microbiota and are more likely to develop asthma.

That’s why she and Dr. Brett Finlay put together “Let Them Eat Dirt:” Saving your child from an over sanitized world. So, do we need an attitude adjustment in thinking that bacteria is all bad to realizing that bacteria can be something good…and essential to your child’s well-being.

According to Dr. Arrieta, she really was adamant that we have to rethink our feeling about bacteria because it can affect our kids’ lifelong health. The past hundred years have brought advances in and more widespread use of antibiotics, antivirals, vaccinations, chlorinated water, pasteurization, sterilization, hand sanitizers, and even good old fashioned hand washing.

However, diseases and disorders like asthma, allergies, obesity, and autism are on the rise. According to the docs, there is a connection here.

The first five years are crucial because it takes about three to five years from the time we are born to become a fully established community for a solid foundation for future health. At the moment of birth, a child receives a big load of microbes from the mother.

Babies born vaginally encounter essential microbes. If medical interventions are necessary, such as C-sections and antibiotics, there are ways to re-populate babies’ microbiota.

Breast milk is the jackpot for microbes. We all know breast milk is rich with nutrients, but it also contains an ever-expanding list of antibodies, proteins, and enzymes that promote immunity and intestinal development. If breastfeeding is not an option, supplementary probiotics are crucial.

Antibiotics are overused. A recent study of 65,000 children in the U.S. showed that more than 70% of them had received antibiotics by the age of two, and those children and that those kids averaged eleven course by age five.

Here is what’s disturbing. Children who received four or more courses of antibiotics in their first two years were at 10% higher risk of becoming obese/

Kids need dirt. You don’t have to move to a farm (although Amish children raised among pastures have excellent gut microbiota). But making changes like less frequent handwashing after outdoor play, letting your dog snuggle with your baby (dogs are truly microbes best friend” and requiring daily time outside will all help build a stronger microbiome in your child.

Avoid sugar. The foods that babies eat in the first year of life determine the type of microbes that grow in them. Certain foods, like those with sugars and high starch, are absorbed in the upper intestine and don’t even make it to the lower intestine where microbes are waiting to be fed. Try legumes and fiber for microbes to flourish.

Probiotics are not approved by the FDA, so some products on the market may not have the exact microbes your child needs. Besides, probiotics are not enough. What’s better is not putting microbes at risk in the first place.

You can go to www.letthemeatdirt.com or check out “Let Them Eat Dirt.”

It will really go into detail. Cleaniliness? Yes! But don’t overdo!

Admit One from Mary Jane Popp

Click Here for Kati Kleber's Website

You land up in a hospital and you feel like you are in a maze. Do you have the correct information when you go in?

Did you know that communication breakdowns in hospitals in the U.S. led to more than 1700 deaths over a five year period? Maybe that does not sound like a big number, but it is if it happens to you. What if I told you, you need a medical team?

But let’s face it, in the trauma of being admitted, patients and family can easily become confused by the tons of information and instructions from these strangers.

That’s why Kati Kleber, BSN,RC, and CCRN and nationally certified critical care nurse in the neurosciences intensive care unit at Novant Presbyterian Medical Center pulled together information you need to know before it all comes crashing down and you become one of those 1700 plus victims.

It’s called “Admit One” with what you must know when going to the hospital, but no one actually tells you. From CNN to Dr. Oz Kati shared the insider information with me on POPPOFF.

1) BRING A LIST OF HOME MEDICATIONS. Know what medications you take on a regular basis. When you are admitted someone will ask you to provide a list of your med and will put them in your chart. Your attending doctor will decide which to keep you on in the hospital. On this one, I asked Kati if it’s a good idea to have a list of vitamins and herbs you take, and she said absolutely because of interactions.

2) MAKE A LIST OF HEALTH CARE TEAM MEMBERS. An extensive team of health professionals will come and go from your room. It’s hard to tell which is which…doc, nurse, consultant etc. You and your support person will want to write down who is who, along with their instructions.

3) KNOW YOUR CODE. Your code status informs staff what to do if you stop breathing or your heart stops. Patients without chronic health issues who aren’t nearing the end of their life may want health professionals to do everything to revive them. Others with terminals diagnosis or advanced age may choose not to be revived. This is called DNR or Do Not Resuscitate.

4) ASSIGN A SPOKESPERSON. Identify someone the hospital staff can call when changes occur. It is important this person can be easily reached and that you trust.

5) WRITE DOWN QUESTIONS AS YOU THINK OF THEM. Except for nurses, most team members stop by your room once a day, review your care plan, and make adjustments. It’s not easy to remember all your questions.

6) ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF. Let the nurse know of any changes in your condition so the information can be relayed to your health care team. Also, if for any reason, you are not happy with a member of your health care team, let your nurse know that you’d like to speak with a nurse manager.

7) LEAVE THE EQUIPMENT TO THE EXPERTS. Hospitals are full of elaborate, high-tech equipment. If any equipment becomes dislodged, always alert a nurse. Unfortunately, incidents have occurred where patients or family inflict irreparable harm when trying to fix things themselves.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg, lots more in “Admit one.” You can also check out www.nurseeyeroll.com.

 STAY WELL!

Staying Sharp with Mary Jane Popp

Available on Amazon
Do you want to keep your brain young? Dr. Henry Emmons and Dr. David Alter shared some basic tips to get you started on POPPOFF.

In “Staying Sharp” these docs tell us what to do today to have a healthy, vibrant mind tomorrow with nine keys for a youthful brain through modern science and ageless wisdom. Dr. Emmons is a psychiatrist who integrates mind-body and natural therapies, mindfulness and compassion practices into his clinical work.

Dr. Alter is a psychologist with thirty years experience in health psychology, neuropsychology, and clinical hypnosis. Want that youthful brain? Okay. A youthful brain is:

1) ACTIVE. Staying in motion makes the brain bigger, stronger, and faster while protecting against harmful effects of stress. Exercise and moving the body mindfully (yoga is great for this) improves brain health, energy, and emotional resilience.
2) RESTED. Sleep is among the most powerful means to promote mood, memory, and healing. Sleep problems, although more common as we age, are preventable. The mind can be recharged through safe and natural mind-body approaches, including accessible self-hypnosis.
3) NOURISHED. Nutrition has a vital impact on brain health. A brain-supporting approach to diet encompasses whole and plant-based foods, healthy fats, fiber, probiotics, and emphasizes nutritional diversity to nourish and protect the mind.
4) CURIOUS. Novelty, play, and wonder act as potent brain “fertilizers” that reboot the brain, keeping it fresh and vital by balancing knowledge with a desire to know more. People who remain curious and open to new experience tend to lead longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.
5) FLEXIBLE. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s amazing ability to rewire in the face of new experiences. Learning to adapt and respond more flexibly to change, through meditation and other means, allows people to thrive despite the challenges faced in the second half of life.
6) OPTIMISTIC. Higher levels of optimism lead to measurable physical and mental health benefits. Cultivating the inner quality of optimism supports greater resilience against age-related challenges and set-backs.
7) EMPATHIC. Our brains are wired to be compassionate and generous. Practicing empathic skills regulates one’s own mind and behavior, promotes contentment, calmness, and satisfaction…and influences the brains of those with whom we interact.
8) CONNECTED. It is important to connect meaningfully with others and develop a sense of belonging in the world. Mental and physical health depends on how well social connections provide meaning, purpose, and direction.
9) AUTHENTIC. The true self may be found in all of life’s experiences…triumphs and failures. By discovering one’s true self through awareness, honesty, and discernment, we become fully embodied authentic individuals. Learn to stop “wearing other people’s faces” or living out others’ expectations to simply please them.

Isn’t it amazing? I’m sure common sense reigns supreme as we look at these ideas, but we sometimes ignore that common sense. If you want more information on their book “Staying Sharp” you can go to www.StayingSharp.org.

Guess the old saying . . . ”if you don’t use it, you lose it” rings true. Guess we were not meant to be couch potatoes without a thought rolling around in our brains. Remember . . . STAY SHARP ALWAYS!

A Spot of Tea for Tox

Meet Dr. Holly Lucille
Can you use tea as your medicine for fitness and weight loss? According to health and wellness expert Dr. Holly Lucille, you certainly can.

Dieting can be hard work and frustrating too…especially after days or weeks of deprivation and that number on the scale has hardly moved. It might even go in the wrong direction all together. But before you give up, listen up.

Don’t head to that pint of Ben and Jerry’s yet. The good Doc has a simple suggestion she shared with me on POPPOFF.com that can help all struggling dieters. How about a tea detox? According to Dr. Lucille, there are two primary reasons why body toxins interfere with weight loss.
1) “Our bodies try to protect us from dangerous substances by isolating and surrounding them with mucous, fat, and fluid so that they will not cause an imbalance or trigger an immune response. Our body want to keep its fat and fluid in place to buffer the toxins.”
2) “Toxins cause inflammation, leading to leptin resistance. When leptin resistance occurs in the body, excess weight is maintained.”
Teas have been used for detoxifying and healing properties for many centuries. Here are a few tea types that have been shown both anecdotally and clinically to stimulate the detoxification process and/or jump-start the burning of resistant body fat.
1) GREEN TEA. Green tea has many well-researched health benefits including its ability to reduce oxidative stress, slow the aging process, reduce the formation of fat cells, speed metabolism, and increase fat-burning.
2) OOLONG WU YI TEA. Grown in the mountains of China, Oolong increase metabolism, improves alertness and cognitive function. Medicinally, it has been used to prevent tooth decay, cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis.
3) ROOIBOS TEA. A healing tea with anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties.
4) GINGER TEA. This tea aids digestive health, lowers cholesterol, dilates blood vessels, triggers thermogenesis, and boosts metabolism.
5) BIRCH TEA. Assists the transfer of toxins out of the body through the skin by stimulating perspiration. Birch possesses antiviral properties and is an immune activator.
6) GUARANA TEA. Guarana lessens food cravings and also increases the metabolic rate. It also acts as a diuretic, aiding the body in the elimination of excess fluids.
7) SYNERGISTIC BLENDS. Tea blends. Blended formulations give dieters and health enthusiasts additional benefits derived from the synergistic effect of the teas when taken in combination. Blended teas like Fit Tea, which contains the organic teas listed above and more, are enjoying tremendous consumer acceptance.
Healing teas have been around for thousands of years, but there is a surge in their use for both detoxing and slenderizing bodies. Dr. Holly Lucille is a nationally recognized and licensed naturopathic doctor and educator who has appeared on a myriad of TV programs with the likes of “Dr. Oz” and “The Doctors.”

In her book, “The Art of Detoxing,” she explores all the possibilities for doing this thing detoxification which can help with getting fit and weight loss. You can also check out her website www.fittea.com.

Have a spot of Tea for Tox!

Fat-me-Not - The slim plate diet

From the files of Mary Jane Popp at KAHI Radio in Sacramento, California

Available on Amazon
Summer is creeping up on us. Have you looked in the mirror lately?

Are you ready to shed those sweaters for the itsy bitsy bikini?

What if you could burn that nasty fat without pills or super exercising?

Dr. Sandeep Grewal says there are fat burning foods. Along with Dr. Myo New, Dr. Grewal has finally connected the advances in weight-loss science in their book “Fat-Me-Not” weight loss diet of the future.

They say why try to lose weight the old way when powerful new research can make it simpler, easier, and safer to shed those pounds. Dr. Sandeep, board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine shared the type of diet you should create to burn fat with me on my POPPOFF Radio Show like:

EATING REAL FOOD: Whole grain food, Meat, Eggs, vegetables and fruits that promotes gut workout, spend about 35% more calories digesting and absorbing the food, and also increase the satiety and cut cravings for sweet sugary drinks. Choose the diet that allows you to eat real foods rather than protein shakes and powders.

EATING A BALANCED DIET RATHER THAN A LOW CARB, LOW FAT DIET: Different body organs need different nutrients, for example, sugar (carb) is essential for blood cells and brain cells. Without the sugar (carb) the brain will be chasing cabs and sweets. That’s how cravings begin and the discipline of dieting gets ruined. That is the reason if you want to lose fat, you need to shoot for a balanced diet for long term results. Losing weight from body water and lean body are short term. Quick fix diets will get you weight loss for a short time and then pounds come back with a vengeance.

EATING FOUR OR FIVE TIMES A DAY: Our metabolism goes down 40% if we do not eat for more than 4-6 hours. It shuts down the less essential departments of the body. If your body senses that you are a regular breakfast skipper or small lunch eater, or just one meal a day eater, it will be cutting the calories by 40% without realizing it. That’s why some obese people gain more weight without eating much. So let’s fast-pace our metabolism by eating at least 4-5 times a day in correct potions. Let the gut work hard digesting, transporting, absorbing, storing, and transforming the nutrients at the interval of approximately every 4 hours. When your gut is working hard, you know it’s burning fat too.

FOODS THAT BURN FAT: Whole grain breads and pasta, brown rice, legumes, lentils…good stable foods. Variety of colorful vegetables will give your gut a good gut work out and burn more calories. High fiber diets promote fat-me-not bacteria in the gut and promotes weight loss. Lean meat, fish, sea foods are great fat burners. For example, compare a protein shake vs a piece of lean meat with the same calories…eating meat will burn up to 40% more calories than the ready-made protein shakes and the lean meat will enhance the gut work out by chewing, digesting, absorbing, and transforming the nutrients. Coffee, pepper, and chewy veggies are good metabolism enhancers. Good fat such as avocado, nuts, egg yolks are helpful too. Drinking 8 glasses of water per day is essential to improve metabolism, and burn fat.

These are a few of the ideas explored in “Fat-Me-Not” and you can check out more at www.slimplatesystem.com.

Good luck with that itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini!

Beating Stress (part two)

Beating Stress ~ Part Two from Mary Jane Popp at KAHI Radio in Sacramento, California

Available on Amazon
The last time on POPPOFF radio we spoke of how stress can really cause major problems in your life and mine. We all tend to ignore stress because it’s in our lives daily.

So we don’t feel like we have the time to deal with it. But even small amounts of stress can put your body on high alert and it is dealing with physical and emotional responses to perceived dangers which aren’t always real.

We covered Breathing, Smiling, Worrying, Maintaining blood sugar levels, Making Plans.

Now we’ll get to the last five to fight that pesky thing called stress.

Continued from Part One:

6) EXERCISE: True, just exercising won’t magically make your stress disappear, but it will definitely reduce some of the emotional intensity that you’re feeling; clear your thoughts and also enable you to manage your problems more calmly. Exercise naturally reduces levels of your body’s stress hormones (such as adrenaline and cortisol) and while it simultaneously stimulates the production of endorphins (which are your body’s natural painkillers and mood enhancers.)

7) VISUALIZE SOMETHING POSITIVE: When confronted with stressful situations or with anxious thoughts, take a moment to simply visualize yourself handling the situation with calm, ease, and clarity. True you must first try not to pay attention to your current frenzied mental state, but focus instead on the feelings of making it through with smooth-sailing through the storm with solutions and ideas coming to you effortlessly.

8) BE SILENT: Plan ahead for a small amount of time when you can completely disconnect. Begin this with increments of time that seem sustainable and doable for you, even if it’s just five minutes. That means no phone, no texting, no emails, no TV—nothing! Put the word out to others that they won’t be able to reach you so you can veg-out worry free.

9) POSITIVE SELF-TALK: This will require a bit of a shift in perspective for those who are more naturally pessimistic. Recognize that your problems are often a question of perspective. When you allow yourself the opportunity to change your angle, you may see your situation from a more positive point of view. With conscious and consistent effort you can actually train yourself to be more positive about life. Let’s start. You don’t have to create formal Affirmation, but try several times throughout your day (and especially during times of stress) some positive, self-affirming messages to self like, when you’re a bit anxious try “I always find a way, just breath and relax,” “It can be done” or All will be well.” Studies have shown that simply expressing gratitude will help reduce anxiety.

10) SMELL SOMETHING WONDERFUL AND RELAXING: The nose is a powerful tool. Sniff some calming essential oils—Vanilla, Orange, Basil, Anise, and Chamomile are great choices. Research shows that these scents can reduce tension in the body and help increase mental clarity.

Of course, this is just a smattering of all the information you will be in “The Biology of Beating Stress.” But it’ll give you a start.

A thousand ways to die

From the Warning Signs of Alan Caruba at Facts-not-Fantasy

Know the Warning Signs from Alan Caruba
Does a day go by when we are not warned about something that might do us harm or kill us?

I recently received an email from the Surgeon General of the United States in which he said, “Yesterday, I had the opportunity to meet with President Obama, EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy and health care professionals to discuss climate change.

We talked about the impact of climate change on public health and the importance of prevention.”

The prevention of what? Climate change?

In the five thousand years of human civilization, there has never been, nor will ever be, a way to “prevent” climate change. This is not to say that earlier cultures didn’t try to solve drought or other weather-related problems by sacrificing the occasional virgin. We look back at that and regard it as primitive in the same way we find the notion of American Indians doing “rain dances” to induce a downpour to help the crops to grow a thing of the past.

The politicization of “climate change”, a planetary phenomenon that goes back about a billion or so years ago when the Earth took on its present atmosphere and weather patterns tells you everything you need to know about the White House and those who think they can tell outrageous lies to Americans, knowing at least half of them will believe those lives.

You’re not going to die from the "climate", but what kills Americans is well known.

The good news is that we’re living longer lives than the generations that preceded us.

We can determine what we eat and how much. Some of us thrive on exercise and others do well by ensuring they get a good night’s sleep. There are behaviors we should avoid, but their harm can be traced from a lack of moderation. People who opt for genuinely bad behavior such as drug addictions or alcoholism are simply ruining their own lives and those who care about them.

The obstacles to a long, healthy life often involve factors over which we have no control. These include family histories of illness, genetically passed on from generation to generation.

There are some fifteen most common causes of death in America and they range from diseases of the heart (28.5%) down to homicide (0.7%). That’s right. Even though our media is filled with news of homicides and popular culture features murder, the likelihood of suffering death that way is very small.

Disease of the heart (28.5%) and malignant tumors (22.8%) are responsible for more than 50% of the annual death toll. Other leading causes drop off dramatically by comparison. They include cerebrovascular diseases (6.7%), chronic lower respiratory disease (5.1%), and accidents (4.4%).

On my Facebook page I asked my friends to list some of the things they have been warned about over the years. The list included salt, bacon, processed meats, eggs, soft drinks, saccharin, sugar substitutes, margarine, and chocolate. I have no doubt you can think of other things you’ve been told to avoid.

Now, not including things like gluten or peanuts that activate allergic reactions in some people, these and comparable things are not likely to kill you. My rule of thumb has always been to eat the real, the natural food product like butter and avoid the substitutes.

Facts-not-Fantasy
I have no doubt that people have died from smoking. Cigarettes have long been called “coffin nails” in acknowledgment of the way too much smoking can affect one’s lungs. That said, I have smoked for some fifty years and a good cigar is daily pleasure.

My Father smoked a pipe for just as long and lived into his 90s. My Mother who taught the art of gourmet cooking, complete with every delicious sauce and method of preparation you can imagine, lived until age 98. An international authority on wine, she would remind her students that you can find it mentioned frequently in the Bible. It is a healthy addition to your diet.

While we are constantly being warned against everything as a potential cause of death, you might find it of interest to learn that the American Medical Association conducted several research studies in the last decade, concluding that approximately 225,000 Americans died from their medical treatments!

Unnecessary surgeries caused 12,000 deaths and hospital medication errors killed 7,000. The odds of dying from an infection you pick up in the hospital is impressive; some 80,000 deaths were attributed to that, but the largest number of deaths, 106,000, were attributed to “negative effects of drugs.” To put it another way, “doctor-induced deaths are the third leading cause of death in the U.S. after heart disease and cancer.”

While we live daily with warnings about everything from the air we breathe to the water we drink (both quite clean), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) collects data on mortality, including suicide. In 2013, suicide was the tenth leading cause of death in America. Someone committed suicide every 12.8 minutes.

From 1986 to 2000, suicide rates had dropped from 12.5 to 10.4 deaths per 100,000 people. It is back up to 12.6, mostly involving people 45 to 64 years old, as well as those over 85 and older. The rate among men is four times higher than women and whites killed themselves (14.2) far more often than blacks (5.4) and Hispanics (5.7).

While the White House is adding to our stressful lives with utter nonsense about “climate change”, claiming it is affecting our health, there’s another group, those in charge of the United nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UFCC), whose greatest concern is the fact that there are some seven billion of us on planet Earth whom they blame for eating too much and using too much of its energy resources.

“Obviously less people would exert less pressure on the natural resources,” said Christiana Fiqueres, the Executive Secretary of the UNFCC. You can translate to mean that there are those at the United Nations who wouldn’t mind if a new plague came along to kill off thousands or if famine did the same thing.

Buy your health insurance out of state

Buy your health insurance out of state from the files of Jeff Jacoby at the Boston Globe

The second open enrollment period for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act is underway, and the law is more unpopular than ever. According to Gallup, a record-high 56 percent of Americans now disapprove of the 2010 law.

Reasons to dislike ObamaCare have abounded from the outset, and on Friday the administration unveiled a new one: In large swaths of the country, the price of insurance sold on the federal health exchange is going up.

That will force many of those who bought coverage last year to scramble to find a new policy or fork over as much as 20 percent in higher premiums. How's that "affordable" health care working out for you?

Republicans in Congress — less inclined than some deep thinkers to sneer at "the stupidity of the American people" — unanimously opposed the Affordable Care Act when it was enacted, and were rewarded in the 2010 midterms for their steadfastness.

In the ensuing four years, Republicans repeatedly called for replacing ObamaCare with alternatives expanding choice, competition, and market reforms — and the voters just rewarded them again.

Of course, even with their new majorities in Congress Republicans will have to contend with President Obama's veto pen. So a bill "repealing every last vestige of ObamaCare," as Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky exuberantly proposed on Election Night, isn't in the cards anytime soon.

But that doesn't mean there is nothing to be done, particularly since the Supreme Court has agreed to hear a new challenge to the law, one that could potentially cause ObamaCare to topple under its own weight.

One way or another, changes in the law are coming. Not all of them have to be bitterly controversial, or provoke cries of Republican overreaching. Here's a suggestion: Allow individuals to buy health insurance from out of state.

In an age when consumers can purchase almost anything from vendors almost anywhere, government policies protecting insurance companies from interstate competition are indefensible. Lawmakers would be laughed out of office, rightly, if they insisted that the only CDs, cellphones, or ceramics their constituents could buy were those manufactured in the state where they lived.

All sorts of financial products are routinely acquired without to state borders proving an impenetrable barrier: life insurance, service warranties, stocks and bonds, bank accounts, credit cards. Why should a medical plan be any different?

How America Views the Patient Protection Affordable Care Act

There is no good reason to deny freedom of choice to Americans when it comes to buying health insurance. Yet licensing rules in virtually every state effectively prevent individual residents from shopping for health plans in any other state.

Consequently, there is no national market for health insurance. There are only autonomous state markets, many dominated by near-monopolies that can get away with offering lower quality insurance at ever-higher premiums.

As Michael Cannon of the Cato Institute points out, it isn't only insurance companies that are sheltered from the rigors of competition. Insurance regulators are insulated too. State governments, inveigled by special interests, can burden health insurance policies with more and more mandatory benefits, driving up premiums to cover services that many consumers would never willingly choose.

In Massachusetts, for instance, health insurance policies must cover at least 49 specified treatments and types of providers, among them midwives, infertility treatments, hair prostheses, and chiropractors.

But what if all you want is a plain-vanilla health plan akin to those sold by insurers in New Hampshire (only 38 state-required health-care mandates) or, better yet, in Michigan (24) or Idaho (13)? Tough luck. That's what it means when interstate commerce in health insurance is blocked.

Polls show broad public support for the idea — as high as 77 percent in a recent Rasmussen poll. Legislation to overhaul the Affordable Care Act, currently being drafted by Florida Senator Marco Rubio and Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan, will reportedly include interstate choice.

"We want … every American to be able to buy the kind of health insurance they want at a price that they are willing to buy and from any company in America that will sell it to you," Rubio said in a recent radio interview.

Which isn't to say change can only come from above. One can envision a moderate, pro-reform governor championing such market choice at the state level — a just-elected Republican, say, with a deep knowledge of the health insurance industry.

How about it, Charlie Baker? Why not use that new bully pulpit to advocate for legislation freeing Massachusetts residents to buy a health policy from any properly licensed insurance company in America willing to sell it to them?

It's a fix long overdue. With the distortions imposed first by RomneyCare and then ObamaCare, Massachusetts could use it more than ever. The rest of the country could too.
