Slim for the Holidays by Mary Jane Popp

Meet Dr. Susan Smith-Jones
Five to seven pounds added to your waistline…maybe more…between Thanksgiving and the first week in January? Yikes!

That’s what the experts tell us, but what can we do to enjoy the holidays without gaining weight? Lots of questions, but what about answers?

I checked in with Dr. Susan Smith-Jones out Hollywood way on POPPOFF.

She is author of some 25 books, motivational speaker, and holistic health expert and her celebrity list is impressive. If it’s good enough for them, I figured we could take a shot at slimming down and not puffing up for this ‘tis the season for being jolly.

So enjoy your holidays and take heed of these ten tips.

The first one is really HOT ! HOT ! HOT !

1) CAYENNE PEPPER - This wonderful spice provides a three-pronged attack against obesity.

First, eating cayenne may help fight off food cravings. Some experts believe that eating sharp-tasting foods such as hot peppers can overwhelm taste buds, cutting off cravings.

Second, cayenne helps you eat less. Researchers in the Netherlands gave men .9 grams of ground cayenne pepper either as a pill or mixed into a tomato juice beverage. Then 30 minutes later, they turned the men loose at an all-you-can-eat buffet. Compared with men who were given a placebo, the men who had consumed cayenne reduced their food intake by 16%.

Third, it actually requires energy to eat hot peppers. That’s right. That’s because the heat you feel when you eat chili peppers takes energy to produce. That’s why Dr. Jones adds cayenne capsules to her daily health and nutrition program. And especially with any large holiday meal, she finds ways to also consume some cayenne.

2) DON’T SKIP MEALS - Make sure to eat something every 3-4 hours so you won’t get famished and end up eating more than necessary.

3) BRING HEALTHY SNACKS -  While shopping or in the car, healthy snacks help your blood sugar not to plummet.

4) HAVE SOMETHING SMALL TO EAT - That’s before you go out, especially to a holiday party or big dinner so you don’t arrive with a voracious appetite.

5) DON’T HANG OUT NEAR THE FOOD during holiday parties and large gatherings where there are tables of food.

6) DON’T JUST EAT TO BE SOCIAL - Choose wisely what food you hold in your hands while talking to others at holiday gatherings.

7) KEEP YOUR BODY HYDRATED with purified water. We often confuse hunger with dehydration.

8) START ALL MEALS WITH HIGH-FIBER FOODS to fill your stomach. Fiber is your secret weapon to weight control.

9) EAT SLOWLY - Put down the fork between bites. Make a meal last 30 minutes so your brain’s satiety center gets the signal when you are full.

10) MAKE SLEEP A PRIORITY - Lack of sleep causes your body to hold on to all of the calories you eat and strengthens your desire for junk foods.

So go ahead and enjoy this wonderful time of the year, but remember all that extra gym work you’ll have to do in January if you’re not a little careful.

HAPPY SLIM HOLIDAYS!

A Thanksgiving Thank You

Can you believe that Thanksgiving is almost upon us? Then it happens without even our knowing. We get so caught up in our get together's with turkey and cranberries and pumpkin pie that we forget what this holiday is all about.

I know it’s about Pilgrims and Native Americans and that first encounter, but we know in our hearts it’s so much more. So before you get started on the invitations and the menu planning, I wanted to share some possibilities about Thanksgiving that you may never have thought about.

After interviewing thousands and thousands of fascinating folks from all walks of life over some four decades from renowned doctors, lawyers, politicians, and celebrities, I discovered some similarities. Yes, they were thankful for their success and adoration for the work they do, but there was more of a common theme for their thankfulness.

Was it money? No! Was it recognition? No! It was thanks for their families and the opportunity to do for others. There were a few narcissistic souls, but very few. And that gave me hope that the world is not as screwed up and full of hate. It helped me to realize there is still hope in this wild and crazy world we live in.

Then I had the chance to speak with world-renowned Vincent Genna, triple power Psychic . . . an authentic and gifted Psychic with the knowledge of a licensed psychotherapist, and a charming personality that helped some 500 patients through the dying process with his hospice experience.

George Noory has had him on “Coast to Coast” several times along with so many other national TV and Radio Shows. But what hooked me was his read on what to be thankful for.

Here’s how it began. He told me we all sit around the table to share what we are thankful for. Perhaps it’s the good job you have or thank God you don’t have cancer like a friend. We compare ourselves to the rest of the world.

Perhaps we are just grateful that we are not that other schmuck that has to go through all the bad stuff. But are we really in control or do we merely make the right choices that bring us the good things? Is it luck? Maybe, but perhaps it’s the choices you. Therefore, maybe you should be thankful for the ability you have to make the right choices to bring you the things to be thankful for.

According to Genna, we don’t appreciate ourselves enough. It is the external world that is manifested by the internal self. He thinks we are too mean to ourselves. We downgrade ourselves too much. Bottom line is what happens outside starts with what you do on the inside.

So be grateful for that inner fortitude that steers you in the right direction so that you have much more than you can imagine to be thankful for on this special day and be thankful every single day!

If you want to know more about this insightful personality, you can go to www.VincentGenna.com.

So perhaps this Thanksgiving I will hope for that inner self to be strong to make the right choices, and this Thanksgiving I will be thankful for the choices I make to share with you on POPPOFF - written and spoken.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Staying Sharp with Mary Jane Popp

Available on Amazon
Do you want to keep your brain young? Dr. Henry Emmons and Dr. David Alter shared some basic tips to get you started on POPPOFF.

In “Staying Sharp” these docs tell us what to do today to have a healthy, vibrant mind tomorrow with nine keys for a youthful brain through modern science and ageless wisdom. Dr. Emmons is a psychiatrist who integrates mind-body and natural therapies, mindfulness and compassion practices into his clinical work.

Dr. Alter is a psychologist with thirty years experience in health psychology, neuropsychology, and clinical hypnosis. Want that youthful brain? Okay. A youthful brain is:

1) ACTIVE. Staying in motion makes the brain bigger, stronger, and faster while protecting against harmful effects of stress. Exercise and moving the body mindfully (yoga is great for this) improves brain health, energy, and emotional resilience.
2) RESTED. Sleep is among the most powerful means to promote mood, memory, and healing. Sleep problems, although more common as we age, are preventable. The mind can be recharged through safe and natural mind-body approaches, including accessible self-hypnosis.
3) NOURISHED. Nutrition has a vital impact on brain health. A brain-supporting approach to diet encompasses whole and plant-based foods, healthy fats, fiber, probiotics, and emphasizes nutritional diversity to nourish and protect the mind.
4) CURIOUS. Novelty, play, and wonder act as potent brain “fertilizers” that reboot the brain, keeping it fresh and vital by balancing knowledge with a desire to know more. People who remain curious and open to new experience tend to lead longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.
5) FLEXIBLE. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s amazing ability to rewire in the face of new experiences. Learning to adapt and respond more flexibly to change, through meditation and other means, allows people to thrive despite the challenges faced in the second half of life.
6) OPTIMISTIC. Higher levels of optimism lead to measurable physical and mental health benefits. Cultivating the inner quality of optimism supports greater resilience against age-related challenges and set-backs.
7) EMPATHIC. Our brains are wired to be compassionate and generous. Practicing empathic skills regulates one’s own mind and behavior, promotes contentment, calmness, and satisfaction…and influences the brains of those with whom we interact.
8) CONNECTED. It is important to connect meaningfully with others and develop a sense of belonging in the world. Mental and physical health depends on how well social connections provide meaning, purpose, and direction.
9) AUTHENTIC. The true self may be found in all of life’s experiences…triumphs and failures. By discovering one’s true self through awareness, honesty, and discernment, we become fully embodied authentic individuals. Learn to stop “wearing other people’s faces” or living out others’ expectations to simply please them.

Isn’t it amazing? I’m sure common sense reigns supreme as we look at these ideas, but we sometimes ignore that common sense. If you want more information on their book “Staying Sharp” you can go to www.StayingSharp.org.

Guess the old saying . . . ”if you don’t use it, you lose it” rings true. Guess we were not meant to be couch potatoes without a thought rolling around in our brains. Remember . . . STAY SHARP ALWAYS!

Youthful At Any Age from Mary Jane Popp

Want to look years younger…like who doesn’t? Remember, your skin will be the first to give away your deep, dark secrets. Your skin will let the world know if you have been under great pressure or stress or if you have not been sleeping well because of worries.

But we don’t want to involve needles or even surgery. Holistic health and natural beauty educator, Dr. Susan Smith-Jones shared some of her secrets with me on POPPOFF.

She has six key ingredients for radiant skin. Dr. Smith has authored some 27 books including her new trio of 2016 full-color books…”Healthy, Happy and Radiant…at Any Age” “The Curative Kitchen and Lifestyle” and “Living on the Lighter Side.”

1) PROTECT FROM TOO MUCH SUN. Without sun, there is not life. Too much sun and skin is lifeless. Everything in moderation. Over exposure can break down the collagen and elastin components of the skin, causing loss of moisture, flexibility and tautness. Be wise with your sun-time.

2) EAT SKIN-ENHANCING FOODS. The diet that promotes healthy skin incorporates lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. High in water content, they keep your body hydrated. For the richest foods in water content, look in the produce isles of your grocery store. Don’t skimp on leafy greens. Stay away from too much of fatty foods, sugar, sodas, caffeine, junk foods, dairy products, and too many animal products.

3) SUPPLEMENT WITH NATURE’S PREMIER SKIN REJUVENATORS. These are her favorites. Hawaiian Astaxanthin increases collagen and elastin and improves skin moisture in six weeks. Hawaiian Spirulina is a microalgae that supplies nutrients that are lacking in most diets. Within a couple days, you will feel a difference.

4) KEEP YOUR BODY HYDRATED. Make sure you drink plenty of purified water every day…at least 6-8 large glasses…in between meals. Water moisturizes your skin from the inside out and helps eliminate toxins through the skin. Lack of moisture creates wrinkles just like plums create prunes and grapes create raisins.

5) EXERCISE YOUR WAY TO RADIANCE. Exercise is also a natural and effective way to increase the health of your skin by increasing circulation, eliminating toxins through the skin, and giving the skin that healthy glow. After aerobic exercise, such as brisk walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, or aerobic classes, the skin takes on a beautiful natural glow that no makeup artist could duplicate.

6) CATCH MORE ZZZZs. Getting adequate rest and sleep is essential for cultivating and maintaining beautiful youthful skin. Sleep is when most of the body’s repair work and maintenance are completed. In fact, there’s nothing more restorative for our bodies than getting ample sleep, night after night. Research suggests that even one or two nights of sufficient sleep (experts recommend 8 hours) can lower cortisol levels more than a number of other stress-management techniques combined. Remember that too much unmanaged stress negatively affects the quality of our skin.

Want some other tips for making beautiful skin including natural face masks that you can make in your own kitchen?

Is your cheese older than you?

From the files of Michael Shannon at The Whole Shebang (mostly)

The USDA contends 36 pounds of food per person is wasted each month because easily frightened consumers are tossing groceries based on pessimistic expiration dates.

That's probably a low estimate.

I periodically have to go hands–on with my wife when she experiences a busy–body seizure and attempts to toss food that is merely gaining momentum in my refrigerator.

Learn the proper way to help cheese and milk celebrate its birthday by reading Shannon's column at Newsmax.com.
