The Louisiana legislature gets it

Bold steps must be taken to protect critical services by Marita K. Noon at Energy Makes America Great, Inc.

Marita Noon at Energy Make America Great
At a time when the Louisiana legislature is facing a $1.6 billion budget shortfall with massive cuts in important programs like healthcare and education as a solution, legislators realize tough decisions have to be made—even when the choice may anger advocates who depend on the handouts they claim are essential for survival.

Such is the case of the solar industry in Louisiana. On April 27, the Ways and Means Committee voted on three different bills that will benefit the budget. Each bill faced opposition from the solar industry that stacked the deck with impassioned presenters claiming that the bills will kill jobs and hurt the poors’ opportunities for solar power.

Aaron Dirks, chairman and cofounder of Posigen, spoke in opposition to one of the bills. (Not surprisingly, virtually all of the opposition came from those within the solar industry.) Dirks, who claimed Posigen is “the fourth largest solar company in America,” touted his Harvard Business School education and the status of his checkbook.

He claimed: “I am a successful businessman, this is my 12th business. And I’m proud to say also that we are not arguing today whether or not we should incentivize families from being able to create their own power and that solar is good. But it seems like today that this issue is should it also be available to families who can’t write a $25,000, or now $20,000, check, or go borrow that money from a bank. Should it be accessible to all our Louisiana working families.”

But is solar power, propping up the Harvard educated’s 12th business, really what Louisiana working families are clamoring for?

Or, as Representative James believes, are they more concerned about “the $7 billion give way, tax dollars that we give out, tax dollars that deserve to go to our schools, our hospitals and our roads.” James continued: “This has been an eight year subsidy.” He added: I have nothing against the solar industry, but I am looking out for the future of our state.”

In presenting HB 510, Representative James called it “a bold step, a bold and necessary step for us to correct wrongs.” With the state facing a 56 percent cut to higher education, James says everything needs to be done to be sure that “the single mom has a college that’s affordable to go to.” Without that, there’s no hope she might every set foot in Harvard Business School. James realizes that protecting “the critical services of the state” will require legislators to make “some tough decisions.” And they did.

Legislators saw through the flimflam. They understand that in neighboring states without the generous subsidies, the solar industry has still created jobs. They also understand that a primary driver of increases in electricity costs is the escalating implementation of solar panels.

After the votes, each of the three bills move to a floor vote. For the sake of Louisiana’s critical services, hopefully the full House will vote with the same foresight.

Deflated Balls: A GOP and NFL problem

Deflated Balls: NFL and GOP problem by Jeff Crouere at WLAE-TV 32 in New Orleans

Did You Vote for This?
The sports media has been in a tizzy covering the scandal known as “deflate gate.” After it was discovered that 11 of the 12 footballs used by the New England Patriots in their playoff game against the Colts were deflated, the media speculation has been intense about whether the Patriots altered the footballs to gain an advantage.

It is amazing that with our immense problems, the media is fixated on such a trivial issue. Instead, a related topic is more important, why do Republican Party leaders suffer from deflated balls, politically speaking? The GOP won a landslide mid-term election, but they have been acting ever since like they lost to the Democrats.

Right after the election, Republican leaders in Congress passed the 1774 page “cromnibus” bill which cost $1.1 trillion and funded the President's executive amnesty for 5 million illegal aliens and the unpopular Obamacare legislation. This was in direct opposition to the wishes of voters who gave Republicans control of both houses of Congress.

The anger was so intense that conservatives swamped congressional offices with demands that John Boehner be replaced as Speaker of the House. Again, due to a lack of courage, only 25 House Republicans voted against Boehner. It seems GOP congressmen do not have the appetite for real change either within their party or throughout the nation.

While the President has been aggressively building his liberal legacy and acting like he won the November election, the real winners have been acting like losers and capitulating to Obama.

After the Boehner revolt, the House finally passed a bill to prevent the Department of Homeland Security from funding executive amnesty, but the bill is now headed to the Senate where it faces an “uncertain” future. Senate leaders say they will “try” to pass the bill but no conservative should ever trust Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

In the official response to the President's State of the Union address, U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) did not mention executive amnesty, even though the majority of Americans strongly disapprove.

Lack of Republican courage as was also evident in a border security bill that Republican House leaders were advocating. Fortunately, a revolt by conservatives postponed a vote on the inadequate measure. The initial bill did not contain enough border security measures to please the newly formed House Freedom Caucus, composed of nine courageous conservatives.

According to U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL), the bill is flawed for a variety of reasons including the fact that it “...it does not cut-off access to federal welfare; and it does not require completion of the border fence.”

While congrats are due to the conservatives who killed the bill, the episode highlighted how GOP leadership is more comfortable tinkering with a problem than solving it. They want to pursue half measures instead of forceful action.

While Americans overwhelmingly support enhanced border security with more border patrol agents and additional fencing, GOP leaders lack the “cojones” to pass a tough bill. They are afraid of criticism from the media, Hispanic groups and Democratic colleagues. They are scared of being called racists, so, as a result, they are unwilling to pass meaningful legislation.

In the meantime, the 2016 presidential race is starting and conservative Republicans are desperately looking for a nominee who is courageous and will not be intimidated by the media or special interest groups.

They want a nominee who is unafraid of criticism and a confident conservative who will move this country in the right direction. Such leaders are in short supply and they stand in stunning contrast to what has been displayed by the GOP's dynamic duo of deflation: John Boehner and Mitch McConnell.

Open Memo to the 114th U.S. Congress

Open Memo to the 114th U.S. Congress from the files of JB Williams at the North American Law Center.org

The MOB - McConnell - Obama - Boehner

On January 3, 2015, the 114th Congress of the United States will convene for the new sessions which will run through January 3, 2017. The 2014 mid-term election was a seismic political shift in Washington D.C. power and the American people didn’t make broad changes in power for no reason.

Sometimes, gridlock is the best people can do when in no position to lead. However, American voters made certain that the Republican Party would emerge from the 2014 mid-terms in full control of both chambers of Congress, stripping all congressional support for the Obama Administration leaving the lamest administration in U.S. history in a lame-duck status.

Voters took no prisoners…. And Republicans cannot afford to take any prisoners either for the next two years. They were elected to reverse course in our nation, not to make peace with those across the aisle who have been running roughshod over them and the American people for the past six years.

Republicans were not elected to slow down the demise of a once great country. They were elected to stop the demise and destruction, reverse course 180 degrees and save America from the brink of extinction. They were elected to represent every American who is fed up with the runaway Federal Government. They were elected to turn the tide…

What do “the people” think?

The Associated Press ran broad-based exit-polling in the mid-terms in an effort to properly interpret voter sentiments behind the election results.

Here’s what the people had to say.…

  • 88% of Republicans believe that the country is headed in the WRONG direction under Democrat leadership. 46% of Democrat voters finally agreed. The country wants an overall change in direction, away from Global Marxism and towards secure national sovereignty.
  • 90% of Republicans believe that the nation’s economy is in BAD shape and that Federal economic policy is responsible. Over half of Democrat voters finally agreed. The country wants an end to the economic policies of bankruptcy.
  • Over 80% of Republicans believe that economic conditions will worsen on the past Democrat “social justice” welfare for all track. Over 1/3 of Democrats finally agreed.
  • 64% of Republicans believe that the next generations will have it worse and over 30% of Democrats finally agreed.
  • 80% of Republicans and 60% of Democrats are worried about the growing threat of terrorism on our soil under the Obama Administration.
What do “the people” want?

  • 81% of Republicans want an end to deficit spending. 52% of Democrats agreed.
  • 77% of Republicans want a change in foreign policy. 53% of Democrats agreed.
  • 73% of Republicans want NO AMNESTY of any kind and our immigration laws enforced. 52% of Democrats agreed.
  • 87% of Republicans and 67% Democrats want the U.S. to get tough on terrorism.
  • 88% of Republicans and 78% of Democrats want the Federal government to get out of the way of our free economy.
  • And almost every American wants members of congress to become accountable and hold others accountable for the destruction of our Constitutional Republican
What do people not want?

  • 69% of Democrats think governmental environmental intervention is important. 31% of Democrats and 64% of Republicans disagree.
  • 70% of Democrats want governmental forced redistribution of private wealth. But 30% of Democrats and 58% of Republicans stand opposed.
  • 80% of Democrats want healthcare reform of some sort and 75% of Republicans agree, though they disagree on the federal government’s role in healthcare.
  • 47% of Democrats want abortion on demand and 33% of Democrats want gay marriage rights, a minority in both cases. Republicans stand opposed to both.
So, why did “the people” elect Republicans in 2014?
