Senator Shelby on Veterans Day

U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Alabama) released the following statement regarding Veterans Day:

Senator Richard Shelby (R-Alabama)
“Today I proudly join my colleagues and Americans across the country in paying tribute to our nation’s veterans and their families.

Without the selfless sacrifices of the courageous men and women in uniform, the freedoms we enjoy as Americans would not be possible.

“On Veterans Day and every day, we must remember that freedom comes at a great price, and that we owe our active duty and retired servicemen and women a debt of gratitude.

Our veterans’ unwavering commitment to defending security and prosperity should never be forgotten.”

In honor of Veterans Day, Senator Shelby is featuring several of Alabama’s military heroes on his website.

Eckrich and Albertsons honor military family

Watson Family Surprised With a New SUV

It was the surprise of a lifetime for the Watson family of Boise, Idaho when Eckrich, the makers of naturally hardwood smoked sausage and savory deli meats, partnered with Albertsons, Operation Homefront and former Boise State football player Ian Johnson, to present the family with a brand-new SUV, courtesy of Eckrich.

The Watsons were invited to attend a VIP breakfast before the annual Veterans Day parade in Boise when they were surprised by Johnson, a running back made famous for his winning play in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.

Johnson stepped out of the SUV, which was then presented to the family on behalf of Eckrich. As a popular athlete in Boise, Johnson was honored to help present the new SUV, decorated in the colors of Eckrich with Albertsons and Operation Homefront logos. The vehicle was later part of the parade with the Watson family.

“I am proud to partner with Eckrich to honor the Watson family,” said Johnson. “It’s amazing what Eckrich has been doing over the last four years to support military families. Joining Eckrich to honor such a deserving family is an experience I will never forget.”

The gift of a new SUV is part of the ongoing campaign by Eckrich to honor, thank and support military families through its partnership with Operation Homefront, whose mission is to build strong, stable and secure military families. Eckrich, in its fourth year of partnership with Operation Homefront, has surpassed $1 million in donations since 2012.

“I’d like to thank Eckrich for all of the wonderful things that they've done for our military families,” said Bob Thomas, Chief Operating Officer, Operation Homefront. “We've had a great relationship with Eckrich over the last four years, and I can’t think of a better partner to have as Operation Homefront moves forward in our mission.”

Jannette Watson is a member of the U.S. Army Reserve. She was injured during combat medic training in Texas and is currently undergoing treatment. Jannette, her husband Richard, and their four children maintain a small farm in Boise.

“Eckrich is proud to honor military families across the country,” said Chuck Gitkin, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Smithfield Foods. “We are grateful that Albertsons and Ian share our passion for giving back to such deserving families. On behalf of Eckrich, we are pleased to provide the Watson family with a new SUV in appreciation for their sacrifice.”

Memorial Day 2015

From the Warning Signs of Alan Caruba at Facts-not-Fantasy

Know Alan Caruba's Warning Signs
We need to remind ourselves that Memorial Day is not just another three-day weekend or a day when all manner of sales are offered to those who want to go shopping.

It is a day set aside to honor the ultimate sacrifice of those who have fought to defend our nation and take military action in foreign nations. We honor, too, those who suffered wounds and returned home.

We like to think of America as a nation that has gone to war only when we had to, but a new book, “America Invades: How We’ve Invaded or Been Invaded with Almost Every Country on Earth” tells a different story based on history.

As documented by its authors, Christopher Kelly and Stuard Laycock, America, “has invaded or fought in eighty-four out of 194 countries (countries recognized by the United Nations and excluding the United States) in the world. That’s 43 percent of the total. And it hasn’t been militarily involved with just ninety or a hundred countries. It has had some form of military involvement with a spectacular 191 out of 194. That’s more than 98 percent.”

“Most people,” the authors note “would probably agree that much of what America has done around the world has clearly been wise and noble (as in helping liberate Europe from Nazi tyranny.) Some, however, have been wrong and/or unwise. And some of what America has done has been in-between. In some sense, it’s like looking at the history of one’s own family. And, indeed, all of it—the liberations, the fiascos, and follies—is, in some sense, part of the history of every American citizen.”

Facts-not-Fantasy
That’s why it is a good idea to pause on Memorial Day because as an American it is part of your history. “Americans are always hoping for peace but usually preparing for war” says the authors who remind us that “the American eagle is an ambivalent bird holding arrows in the talons of one foot and an olive branch in the other.”

Our natural instinct is for peace. Only aggressive nations, usually led by despots, want war. That is not a description of America. We have not, however, shied from war when the enemy was a well-defined aggressor.

“In the twenty-first century, the United States, though challenged by Russia and China, is the sole remaining superpower. The global responsibilities that we began to shoulder in the twentieth century seem today more burdensome than ever. The cost of being the world’s policeman seems exorbitant in terms of both lives and treasure.”

That’s why we need to remind ourselves that, as a former Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, has said of America, “We are the indispensable nation.”

We have learned what happens when our President has retreated from the responsibility to deter war. Since leaving Iraq with no U.S. military ground support that nation which was stable at the end of our war there has come under attack by the Islamic State. The President’s efforts to reach a deal with Iran that would allow them to become a nuclear power is causing Arab states to regard the U.S. as abandoning them and could lead to a nuclear arms race in a part of the world that is far from stable.

The U.S. in the wake of World War Two has a vast network of bases and alliances that span the world. Many of those bases were created at the invitation of the host nation. The result, as the authors note is that “The U.S. military, but virtue of its global reach, is almost invariably the first to respond to natural disasters as they occur around the world. If not us, then who will?”

On Memorial Day we honor our sons and daughters who gave their lives when their nation called on them.

“Today the sacrifice of over 218,000 American servicemen and servicewomen is memorialized in military cemeteries in twenty-four different overseas cemeteries in eleven different countries. The boundaries of Jefferson’s Empire of Liberty, therefore, stretch around the world.”

We worry about the emergence of other world powers, but I doubt that Russia which lost 127 million of its people in World War Two or China which is focused on building an economy based heavily on world trade are serious wartime threats.

That does not, however, exclude the likelihood that events may cause the next President to conclude that the only way to put the lid on the Middle East is to return militarily to Iraq and to make it clear to Iran that its nuclear ambitions are untenable and unacceptable.

The ancient Romans knew a truth they share in the phrase, “Si vis pacem, para bellum.” If you want peace, plans for war.

About the only thing that is predictable is that somewhere in the world there will be new wars and, given its power and its responsibility, America may well be engaged in restoring the peace.

Military atheist goes after Christian ROTC

Military atheist activist goes after ROTC programs at Christian schools from the files of Colonel Allen B. West

Read the Colonel Allen B. West Website

The secular humanists are on the offensive again and this time it’s not the Freedom from Religion Foundation but the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) and former U.S. Air Force Academy graduate, Mikey Weinstein. Weinstein now has an Army ROTC program in his sights.

Todd Starnes writing for Fox News asks, “Do Christian colleges have the right to require that ROTC officers [instructors] be followers of the Christian faith? That’s the crux of a controversy surrounding the ROTC program at Wheaton College, one of the nation’s most prominent Christian schools.

The ROTC program at Wheaton College has a long and storied history that is steeped in the school’s Christian tradition. The Rolling Thunder Battalion was established in 1952. The college required all freshmen and sophomore male students to participate in ROTC until 1969.”

“The U.S. Army says they have launched a review of ROTC policies nationwide after the Military Religious Freedom Foundation raised concerns about an ROTC assignment listing for an assistant professor of military science at Wheaton.”

As a former ROTC instructor at Kansas State University and the 1993 U.S. Army ROTC “Instructor of the Year,” I believe I can weigh in on this matter. An ROTC instructor on ANY type of college campus is beholden to the standards and codes of behavior for that respective university as a member of its faculty.

It is the right of the university to have criteria for its faculty, especially if it is a private institution. It is not establishing any formal religion but rather requiring that the qualities and character of the intended instructor are in keeping with that of the university.

Now, Wheaton College has been around for some years and has had an ROTC program as well — so this isn’t some new occurrence. As a matter of fact, Fox reports, “Wheaton said it’s been their preference from the beginning to have an officer who matches the religious identity of the school.

“We have historically required that the lead professor of military science meet the same basic religious standards as the rest of our faculty, as this person is fully a member of our faculty and serves as the interface of the ROTC program with the rest of the Wheaton College academic program,” according to Wheaton spokesperson LaTonya Taylor.

Other ROTC instructors are not required to meet the same standard, she said. However, they are expected to understand and respect Wheaton’s religious mission.”

And of course that instructor isn’t promoting religion, since the students attending Wheaton already comply with the faith belief and standards of the institution.

But for some reason, this again offends the declared radical atheist Weinstein. “While Wheaton is a private Christian college, and can impose a religious test on its own faculty members, it cannot impose that same religious test on the faculty members provided by the U.S. Army for its ROTC program, and the U.S. Army unequivocally cannot require a religious test for any ROTC assignment, regardless of the religious preference of the college at which that ROTC assignment exists,”

MRFF founder Mikey Weinstein wrote in a letter sent in November to Secretary of the Army John McHugh.”

So if this has been an established practice previously and no one has complained, what’s so offensive to Weinstein? What if the person assigned to the ROTC program was a U.S. Army chaplain — who was a former combat arms officer? And if the Army as Weinstein suggested cannot proffer a “religious test,” then how does the Army accept and assign chaplains?

And we all know Weinstein and the MRFF are behind the move to institute atheist chaplains into the military — not there’s a tricky one for you.

Fox says “Weinstein (who reminds me of Saul before his road to Damascus conversion moment making him the devoted Christian disciple and astute Gospel writer Paul) called Wheaton’s policy a blatant violation of the Constitution’s “no religious test” clause and demanded those involved be punished.

“Given the magnitude of these breaches at Wheaton, any and all Army personnel found to be either directly or indirectly complicit in these egregious violations of constitutional and regulatory law must be swiftly, visibly and meaningfully punished,” Weinstein wrote in a letter to the Pentagon.”

Weinstein has previously stated that Christians in the U.S. military who profess their faith and “proselytize” are guilty of treason and sedition and should be court-martialed and imprisoned. I have to wonder if he’s related to Houston’s Mayor Annise Parker…

Todd Starnes, writing for Fox says, “That sounds fairly reasonable to me. A Christian college wants to hire Christian leaders. Who could possibly take offense at that – besides Mr. Weinstein?” I concur.

However, Weinstein fired off a letter to the Pentagon on Nov. 6th demanding an investigation. On Nov. 10 the Army confirmed they had launched a probe. “The Army is conducting a holistic review of the ROTC agreements and policies in effect to ensure compliance with Army regulations and policies,” spokesperson LTC Alayne Conway told Starnes in a written statement.

So from a policy and priority perspective let me analyze this. We have no idea about the status of U.S. Army SGT Bowe Bergdahl but the Army, which is undergoing severe cuts in its readiness, is going to drop everything to appease Weinstein and begin an investigative probe?

Ok, here is how Secretary of the Army West would have replied (and don’t laugh there’s already been one — Togo West), “Mr. Weinstein, thanks so very much for your letter. I have read it and my response is that your U.S. Army is busy maintaining our readiness to protect you and your right to free speech and the ability to say really dumb things.

We will continue to protect that right and that includes the future leaders of our Army being developed at Wheaton College. Have a nice Army Strong day.”

If our military continues to entertain these social egalitarians, who are making much ado about nothing, then we shall indeed see the demise of one of the greatest fighting armies the world has ever known.

Starnes says “Wheaton spokesperson Taylor said the school will cooperate with the Army review. “We fully support the Army conducting whatever investigations it needs to ensure the appropriateness of the training received by ROTC cadets, and we do so with gratitude that any such examination will take place in the context of the US constitutional standards guaranteeing the free exercise of religion and preventing governmental establishment of religion,” Taylor said.”

“There is a call today for a Joshua, a Gideon, a David, as well as for an Elijah and a Paul. ROTC at Wheaton is the answer,” former Wheaton president V. Raymond Edman once declared.

There is nothing wrong from a policy perspective with that statement and the goal of the U.S. Army and Wheaton College in developing the next generation of fine upstanding Army leaders — but there is something amiss with Mikey Weinstein and those who find fault and cause where there truly is none.

In the ROTC assignment world, it was an unwritten rule that for HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) the first preference was to select a black officer as head of the program — even more so, someone who was also a graduate of an HBCU.

After Operation Desert Storm, I was told my next assignment would be ROTC instructor, possibly in Mississippi, but as it happened my wife Angela was a budding young professor at Kansas State.

In any event, the reason for this guideline was to have ROTC instructors who could “identify” with the cadets and share a common background — same as what Wheaton is requesting.

I’m quite sure Mr. Weinstein has no problem with agnostic liberal progressives being sought out on college campuses in certain departments of study.

Decorated Army Colonel may be forced to retire

Army Lieutenant Colonel may be forced to retire for preventing photos of lesbian couple kissing from the files of Colonel Allen B. West

U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Downey
One thing I despise is when a rash political decision to appease a social agenda is not thought through and ends up affecting men and women who seek to serve with honor and distinction.

Such is the case with the repeal of the U.S. military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy — which became highly politicized by outside advocacy groups.

Because it was more important for the Obama administration to give political payback to a small advocacy group — without considering the extensive ramifications of repealing the policy — basically the military was told to make it happen and report success. And now have a serious issue adversely affecting a stellar Army commander.

Consider the case of U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Downey. As the Thomas More Law Center reports, “LTC Downey has given his country and the Army 24 years of distinguished service, including over 1,000 combat flight hours during three combat tours of duty.

He has been awarded 3 Bronze Stars and 7 Air Medals, one with a “V” device for valor in combat. The Air Medal with “V” device was awarded for valor he displayed on May 25, 2011 in “complete disregard for his own safety while initiating multiple engagements against an enemy with superior fields of fire over friendly forces.”

“His actions were decisive in saving the lives of soldiers on the ground.” LTC Downey was selected ahead of officers from all three of the other major services to become the Presidential Airlift Coordinator for the White House in Washington, D.C. from 2008 to 2010.

While serving at the White House, Downey’s direct supervisor described him as “clearly in the top one percent of the handpicked officers of the White House Military Office Operations Directorate and in all of the Lieutenant Colonels I have known in my 20 years of military service.”

From 2010 to 2012, LTC Downey returned to combat as an Aviation Task Force Squadron Commander in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.”

“Under his direction, his unit exceeded Army maintenance standards enabling an unprecedented 3,000 missions executed and 30,000 flight hours flown in the most complex and dangerous region of Afghanistan, the Kunar Valley.

Additionally, under his command, the unit won two national level awards in one year, an achievement repeated only once before in the history of the awards:

  • The Ellis D. Parker Aviation Unit Award for the Top Combat Unit of the Year, which recognized that the unit operated in one of the most challenging and helicopter-dependent areas of operation while sustaining the finest safety record of any Aviation unit in theatre
  • The Army Aviation Association of America Active Aviation Unit of the Year Award, which recognized that his unit flew in excess of 30,000 accident free hours in some of the most inhospitable flying terrain in the world. LTC Downey was rated as the best Aviation Task Force Commander in all of Regional Command East. He was slated to attend the National War College well before his peers.”

Without a doubt this is the exact type of combat leader we need in our U.S. Army at a time when the command of attack helicopter assets will be critical in the fight against Islamo-fascism, Islamic jihadism, and terrorism — as well as what may become a direct confrontation with Iran and Russia.

However, this stellar Army officer is now being stripped of everything he has dedicated his life to in the most heroic manner. According to the Thomas More Law Center, “LTC Downey has faced an Article 15 hearing for assault consummated by battery and violation of the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

The commanding officer, General Mark Milley, found LTC Downey guilty of the charges. As a result, LTC Downey was issued reprimands for both violations, relieved of command, issued a negative Officer Evaluation Report (OER), and removed from the attendance list of the National War College.”

Now of course reading this you have to wonder, what did this warrior do that was so heinous? Well, the story is appalling.

As reported by Yahoo News, “LTC Downey’s attempted to prevent two female officers under his command, a Captain and a Lieutenant, who were in uniform at a formal military ball and were on the dance floor engaged in prolonged French kissing, taking off each other’s uniform jackets, and other intimate conduct, from violating Army regulations regarding public display of affection.

Once he became aware of the situation, LTC Downey took immediate action to stop the inappropriate behavior. He also attempted to prevent other soldiers from photographing and videotaping the officers’ inappropriate conduct, which he believed would embarrass the officers and affect the good order and discipline of his unit. In the process of lowering the camera of an enlisted soldier, the camera accidentally made contact with the soldier’s nose.”

You must understand there were two violations being committed by these female officers — first they were of the same command — one with superior rank — and secondly, they were in violation of the regulation regarding what we call PDA (Public Display of Affection) — any good Battalion Commander would have sought to rectify this situation.

And if it had been two enlisted members, probably the battalion command sergeant major would have taken action. As well, LTC Downey sought to prevent any spectacle of an event occurring, which of course, knowing social media today, this would have appeared on You Tube affecting the good order, discipline and reputation of his unit. What LTC Downey did was commendable — and should have never been brought up on charges.

However, this is the new PC military. Yahoo News writes, “the alleged victim of the assault never accused LTC Downey of assault. In fact, he stated that he was not the victim of an assault, and that he knew LTC Downey never intended to harm him.

Moreover, the investigating officer appointed by General Milley found that LTC Downey did not intend to injure the soldier, but was motivated by the desire to protect the privacy of the two officers involved and the unit’s reputation. The investigator also found there was a positive command attitude and climate regarding repeal of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.”

“LTC Downey’s Article 15 hearing was held in a conference room on May 30, 2012. LTC Downey appeared without his assigned military lawyer because she was told by General Milley’s lawyer that the hearing would merely be a “commanders’ conversation.” She advised Downey that her presence would make him “appear weak.” The hearing lasted 5 hours.”

There is no such thing in UCMJ proceedings as a “commanders conversation.” What ended up happening was complete violation by General Milley of the standard of undue command influence. In an Article 15 hearing you are asked if you wish to waive your legal representation — the commanding officer does not order the assigned defense attorney to not be present.

Yahoo News reports “General Milley appeared at the hearing flanked by two of his staff lawyers who sat adjacent to him while LTC Downey sat alone in the middle of the room with no representation. LTC Downey was asked legal questions, which he was not qualified to answer.

He was also ordered to view a loose leaf binder of random photographs which had been taken throughout the night of the formal ball and characterize the behavior of the individuals depicted in the photos as “appropriate” or “inappropriate.” Although the enlisted soldier LTC Downey was alleged to have assaulted was in the hall, he was not called as a witness. The two lesbian officers he allegedly discriminated against were not called.”

General Milley has grossly overstepped his bounds as a commanding officer and his undue command influence can only be explained by concern over adverse media attention, offending homosexual advocacy groups, and contradicting the Department of Defense’s position that repeal of DADT was being successfully implemented.

And to make matters even worse, Yahoo News says “despite a Show Cause Board’s positive determination LTC Downey’s retention, his remarkable accomplishments, and consistently stellar reviews from his superior officers, a Selective Early Retirement Board, which convened this week November the 12th, will decide whether LTC Downey should be forced to retire.”

What is becoming of our U.S. Army? The Army — as we reported — is opening up an investigation to appease a radical atheist named Mikey Weinstein and about to forcibly retire a highly decorated combat attack helicopter pilot — over unsubstantiated charges!

LTC Downey’s case has now been taken up by the Thomas Moore Law Center (TMLC) — who also took up the case of another decorated Army combat leader, LTC Matthew Dooley, excoriated because CAIR and other Islamist groups complained about his course material at the Armed Forces Staff College.
With full disclosure, I am on the Board of TMLC and based upon the cases of LTCs Dooley and now Downey, proud to be so.
TMLC has brought forth a federal lawsuit on behalf of LTC Downey. TMLC trial counsel Erin Kuenzig is one of the attorneys representing LTC Downey. Kuenzig explained, “A fair and impartial review of the facts leads to only one conclusion—that LTC Downey has always acted to protect the well-being of his soldiers, his unit, and his country and should never have been penalized for doing the right thing.

We are asking the Court to review all of the due process violations and violations of Army regulations that led to such an unjust result in this case.”

This is just another example of how the politics of social egalitarianism and “fairness” ends up violating good policy and regulations in our military. LTC Downey should not become a casualty on the battlefield of politics and political correctness.

And U.S. Army General Mark Milley — a decorated combat veteran and U.S. Army Special Operations qualified leader — needs to explain his undue influence and disregard of the facts in this case.

Something just tells me that it was not General Milley — but undue command influence coming from a higher level. Please, submit your calls to the Secretary of the Army, John McHugh and Chief of Staff of the Army, General Ray Odierno. This travesty must end.
