Meet Congressman Steven Palazzo
It’s no secret that there has been a fair amount of dissension among the Republican Party in Congress. A few weeks ago, Speaker of the House John Boehner, who became the primary target of blame for the party’s division, announced his resignation.

The opportunity to elect new leadership should have been the first step towards uniting the Republican Party; however, that has been far from the case.

Turmoil in the House seems to only have increased as we work to determine who is best fit to lead Congress. However, one thing upon which everyone can seem to agree on are the principles we would each want in the next Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The Four Principles

  • First, we need a proven conservative.
  • Second, we need someone who has stood up to the Republican establishment.
  • Third, we need someone who is willing to take on this President and his liberal agenda every single day.
  • Lastly, we need someone who will bring us back to regular order and restore committee jurisdiction.

Syrian Rebels

This week the president announced that he is going to abandon his plan to arm the Syrian rebels, noting concerns over the ability to adequately vet different opposition groups. While I welcome this decision, it comes $500 million and over a year too late.

Two years ago during a hearing of the Armed Services Committee, I personally explained to Secretary John Kerry that the American People and Mississippians weren’t buying what he was selling. I told him that we simply did not want to get involved in a Syrian civil war, yet we have spent millions of dollars to train a handful of Syrians.

The time has come for America to quit meddling in the world’s problems and start focusing on protecting our homeland and getting our own country back on track.

Ban Lifted on U.S. Oil Exports

Friday the House voted to end a 40-year ban on U.S. crude oil exports. The export ban was signed into law by President Ford in 1975, but the policies behind it are now outdated, and the ban hurts job creation and U.S. national security.

Lifting the export ban simply makes sense, and opening free trade in oil will promote efficiency and energy independence.

Lifting the ban can also help our allies abroad who are currently dependent on Russia which often threatens to cut off energy supply.

America is the largest producer of crude oil, and lifting this ban will provide jobs for Americans and more energy stability throughout the world.
