Meet Mississippi Congressman Steve Palazzo |
Not only does our legislation increase funds for border patrol and the Coast Guard, but it contains no funds for the President’s unconstitutional executive action on immigration and blocks its implementation pending judicial action.
More importantly, Republicans on the Committee and I were successful in blocking a Democrat amendment to impose reckless gun control on the American people. We voted down an amendment by Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY) that would have allowed the Attorney General to deny a firearm purchase without due process of law.
This liberal agenda item was yet another attempt to take guns away from law-abiding Americans without due process. The Appropriations Committee has become the last line of defense against these types of liberal moves to take away our freedoms.
I will always stand up for the Second Amendment on this committee, the House floor, or anywhere else liberal activists seek to take it away from us. The bill also provides funding toward disaster relief and emergency response activities through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
SERC-NAHRO Legislator of the Year
Last weekend I was honored to receive the 2016 “Legislator of the Year” award from the Southeastern Regional Council of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (SERC-NAHRO) during their annual conference that took place at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi.
Many people probably don’t know that I actually worked at a public housing authority many lifetimes ago. I understand the struggles that face our PHA’s and that’s why I introduced legislation to help them.
My legislation provides local flexibility, deregulation and administrative reductions, all of which are crucial to the survival and sustainability of local housing authorities. We need less regulation on small housing authorities, not more.
We should put more faith in PHA's to do what is best for the safety and sustainability of the agency and the program, and most importantly, what’s best for the residents.
