Do socialists even know what socialism is? It's difficult to debate with this new generation of Bernie Sanders-loving pseudo-socialists because they've ridiculously convinced themselves that road construction, the military and the police department is prima facie evidence of socialism.
However, the defining characteristic of socialism is the government-ownership of the economy and the means of production. I still don't understand why this new generation of socialists has a difficult time understanding this simple definition.
Either the economic means of production are owned and managed by the citizens in a free market, or the means of production are owned and managed by the government. This is only complicated for those on the far-left who have constructed a mental Maginot Line to the truth because the truth makes them uncomfortable.
In an effort to make this simple for everyone to understand, here are three simple questions which will help the reader determine if they are a socialist, a believer in free markets, or a hypocrite.
Do you believe in private property? If you own a smartphone, a car, a home, an investment portfolio or any other material or financial good then you are a practicing capitalist whether you like the idea or not. And while private property is a bedrock principle of free markets and capitalism, it is anathema to socialism.
A core tenet of socialism is the government ownership of the means of production in an economy; meaning most forms of private property would violate the ideological tenets of socialism. You cannot own a farm, a computer company or any other form of a business when the economic organizational system in socialist countries dictates that ALL of the means of production are controlled by government planners.
This is really simple to understand when the blinders come off. If the government controls the land you live on or a business you started, then you do not own it, they do.
