Rubio can help to stop Trump

Sometime, soon, Marco Rubio will be dropping out of the race for President. At this point it isn’t a shock. It is inevitable.

Some conservatives backed Rubio. But the Florida Senator failed in almost every way a candidate can. What went wrong and what happens next for conservatives who understand Donald Trump must be stopped?

Rubio is suffering from the same problem Rand Paul had. He was in the wrong electoral cycle. Had he jumped in to the race in 2012, the story might have been different. Rubio would not have fatally injured his standing with conservatives by being a part of the “Gang of Eight.”

He might have been a compromise choice with Romney. Granted he was young then, but he could have put up a more credible fight against Obama than Romney did. On the other hand, anyone who could fog a mirror could have put up a better fight.

Rubio thought the nomination would come to him. It didn’t.

He did not have a good ground game. He did not do retail politics well. And he was an establishment candidate in an anti establishment year.

Marco Rubio has probably already come to the conclusion he is finished. Any sane person would realize that. Yesterday Rubio had a rally in the Miami suburb of Hialeah Florida. No one showed up. Literally, the crowd could be counted with little more than two hands.

Marco Rubio has gone on the attack against Donald Trump in the last two weeks. He has referred to Trump as a con man, among other things. If Marco Rubio really believes those things about Trump, he really only has one choice left.

That choice is, he can drop out and endorse Ted Cruz. That is really the only alternative.

If Rubio continues in Florida and is destroyed in his home state, that finishes his political future. That won’t just leave a mark, that will leave his future political career as little more than road kill on I-4.

And if Rubio really believes the things he says about Trump, he must realize the mission for conservatives now is to stop Trump.

Trump is already hinting he will “move to the center” when he becomes the nominee. After all, this is the guy who said he can be, “anything I need to be.”

What is coming next in this race is Trump’s “Etch A Sketch” moment. In 2012, after Mitt Romney won the nomination, his campaign manager announced the campaign reset, so Romney could now be a liberal Republican. He was going to move to the center.

How well did that work out for Romney? Come to think of it, how well has that worked out for any Republican?

Donald Trump’s history is that of a liberal. He hasn’t changed. He is just marketing to the anger a lot of people feel.

What happens in the fall when he moves to the center?

If Hillary Clinton is the nominee for the Democrats and Trump wins the GOP nomination, then all we have is two New York liberals running for the White House. And that isn’t much of a choice.

There is one way to stop that. Republican must unite to stop Trump while we still can.
