King, Reagan, Thatcher, John Paul.
These giants of our time were transformative figures who, through the power of their words and actions, showed that one man or woman with an iron will and an unbreakable spirit can change our world for the better.
But the men and women who never get a notation in a text book, a Wikipedia page or a public memorial are the friends, teachers, and mentors that these historic figures leaned on to learn how to be the courageous warriors they became.
I recently lost a friend named Mike, who was that mentor and example to many in his community (me included) and I want to give him his moment in the sun by telling you about some lessons his network of friends and I learned from him.
What Mike Taught Us About Work: Mike passed away last week at the age of 85. Although Mike was 85 years old, he labored nearly every day at his restaurant.
Mike owned the restaurant, but it was a common site to see him, at such a seasoned stage of life, on his hands and knees, scrubbing the floors to make sure those stubborn stains that the mop couldn't get were removed.
As his daughter recently relayed to me, he was out in his garden last week pulling weeds from around the vegetables to make sure they grew properly. It pains me to write this, because as I type and the words appear on the computer screen, I am sorely reminded of the pain he must have been in as he worked, literally, until the week of his death.
Mike's uncompromising work ethic should make even the best of us self-reflect for a moment. Can't we all do more? What's our excuse? I'm 41 years old and still in relatively good health. Why am I not doing more?
If Mike's broken body could scrub the floors of his restaurant and pull the weeds out of his garden a week before his death, why am I not doing more to create a better tomorrow for my children?
