Meet Congressman Palazzo (R-MS) |
This legislation honestly has me questioning whether there was actually a Republican in the room when negotiations took place. It’s time to set aside budget gimmicks and make real spending cuts. Otherwise, we are choosing to continue down a slippery slope that will someday hold our children and our grandchildren hostage for these bad decisions. Our children deserve better, South Mississippi deserves better, and the American people deserve better.
Initiative 42
I try not to weigh in too heavily on state legislature issues. However, as a father, I think it is important that I voice my opposition to Initiative 42. This proposal not only costs hundreds of millions of dollars, it also jeopardizes the education of our children in Mississippi and takes away your voice on education issues. I urge you to vote NO on Initiative 42 this Tuesday.
READ Act
This week the Research Excellence and Advancements for Dyslexia (READ) Act was passed in the House. I spoke on the House floor in support of this bill that allows the National Science Foundation to fund research that promotes greater awareness of how to identify students with dyslexia and how to tailor curriculum to better fit their needs. It also aims to put more resources in the hands of parents, teachers, and students.
As an original co-sponsor of this bill, a member of the Bipartisan Congressional Dyslexia Caucus, and as a parent who has seen firsthand the challenges facing today’s dyslexic students, I firmly believe that research, focused on practical applications, is needed to not only help understand dyslexia, but also to afford students an education that enables them to succeed in the classroom and reach their full potential. Honoring Mr. John Rounsaville and Mr. Art Albert.
This week I spoke on the House floor honoring two of my fellow Mississippians and veterans of our “greatest generation.”
The first was Mr. Art Albert from Hattiesburg. I first met Mr. Albert during the Mississippi Gulf Coast Honor Flight and had the opportunity to speak with him again this August at the Victory over Japan Day anniversary ceremony in Hawaii. Mr. Albert served in World War Two, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Although he would disagree—like so many of his contemporaries, to focus not on his service, but the greatness of our nation as a whole—Art Albert is a true American hero.
I also recognized Mr. John Rounsaville of Jones County who celebrated his 90th birthday last month. Mr. Rounsaville served 28 months in the Pacific Theater of operations, earning his unit an impressive six battle stars for World War II service, including the Navy Unit Commendation award. I take great pride in representing World War II veterans like Mr. Rounsaville, who belong to a generation whose sacrifices preserved our freedom and liberated the world from tyranny and oppression.
I’d once again like to extend my sincerest gratitude and appreciation to Mr. John Rounsaville and Mr. Art Albert for their courage and bravery, and their service to this great nation.
