The CNBC Republican presidential debate was a disaster. Many of us inside the conservative movement are still wondering why the Republican Party agreed to this forum for a debate.
The moderators appeared more interested in humiliating the candidates than probing for substantive answers. Making matters worse, CNBC moderator John Harwood consistently based his "questions" on false premises, making them appear more like ideological talking points.
This means that either Harwood was ignorant of the historical economic data he used to set up his questions, or he knew the data contradicted his premises and chose to deceive in an attempt to score liberal propaganda points.
Here's one example of the nonsense the left and its media allies frequently pull on conservative candidates. Moderator John Harwood said to Donald Trump, "I talked to economic advisors who have served presidents of both parties. They said that you have as much chance of cutting taxes that much without increasing the deficit as you would of flying away from that podium by flapping your arms."
That is not a question. That is a political statement about tax policy meant to elicit a response favorable to Democrats.
Framing debate "questions" in this way reminds me of an interrogation technique we learned from the Reid Institute during my Secret Service training course.
They taught us to magnify the degree of the crime by a factor of three, and the suspect being interviewed, subsequent to hearing about the more dramatic, hypothetical crime, would be more likely to admit to the original crime.
In other words, if you have evidence that the suspect passed $9,000 in counterfeit money than confront him with a statement such as "we know you passed the $27,000 in counterfeit."
The suspect doesn't realize that, by even answering the question, he is already admitting guilt; when confronted with this falsehood the suspect is eager to correct the record and will admit to the actual crime and play right into your interrogation strategy.
