Though Bill Maher is a self-described “proud liberal” – a title that few conservatives would contest – his willingness to speak his mind can and does put him at odds with his left-leaning counterparts.
On Friday night’s episode of “Real Time,” Maher discussed a policy that the Obama administration seems to hold about violent acts condoned by Islam – one which he says the President is ‘crazy’ for having.
Speaking with Representative Tulsi Gabbard (D) – who served two tours of duty in the Middle East – Maher said:
“I’ve been trying to convince liberals, some of them, that they really need to go back to school on this issue of Islam, and what it means to be a liberal. And you, I think, are on the same page. You say you don’t like when it Secretary Kerry, for example, says that we should say, oh, it comes from poverty or…thrill seeking . . .President Obama says we shouldn’t even say ‘Islamic extremism,’ we should say ‘violent extremism,’ which is just crazy, right?” Gabbard – who’s taken President Obama to task on this topic before – agreed, saying:
“It is crazy. They do matter, words mean things, and this is what we need to look at…how do we identify our enemies so that we can defeat them?Across social media, many agreed with Maher and Gabbard.
Give them a big house, give them a skateboard, send them on their way. You think that’s going to solve the problem? It’s not.” She added that it’s a “philosophy that gets in the way of us being able to accomplish our mission and defeat those who are threatening us.”
While it’s not the first time that Maher has attacked liberals for “being so politically correct,” he certainly has a very long way to go before conservatives will expect to agree with his viewpoints.
